Colonials Topple Pioneers, 2-1, in Road Finale

Brittany O’Connell and Jane Schleicher found the scoresheet for RMU, while Julia Schmid made 15 saves in goal

Fairfield, Conn. – The Robert Morris University women's soccer team made the most of its scoring opportunities this afternoon, cashing in on two of its five shots on goal en route to a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart in Northeast Conference (NEC) play.

Robert Morris (5-12-0, 3-4-0 NEC) held strong against a persistent Sacred Heart (3-13-0, 2-5-0 NEC) attack, limiting the Pioneers to a single goal in their 16 attempts on target. Julia Schmid made 15 saves in goal for the Colonials, her second double-digit save performance in as many starts.

Brittany O'Connell tallied her first career goal in the 33rd minute to open the scoring, initially ripping a shot off the crossbar before burying her own rebound.

Jane Schleicher doubled the lead in the 60th minute, slotting home a feed from Megan DiNatale for her 11th goal of the campaign.

SHU pulled on back in the 67th minute as Lindsay Savko scored off a pass from Maranda Gibbons.

Schmid stood tall after conceding, making four saves between the 71st and 75th minutes as the hosts pushed for an equalizer. The Pioneers couldn't generate another scoring opportunity until the very last second, when Alex Mesropyan pushed one wide of the netting.

Schleicher moves into a tie for third at RMU for single-season goals, sitting three off of tying the school record of 14 (Katie Dugan, 2002). Among the career record books, the senior holds third in goals (22), shares third in points (48), and ranks second in both goals per game (0.45) and points per game (0.98).

Robert Morris concludes its season on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 3:00 p.m. against LIU Brooklyn. Prior to the contest, the Colonials will celebrate the careers of their senior class (Victoria Kraemer, Samantha Lackner, Jane Schleicher, Keirsten Van Horn, Anni Varjonen) as a part of Senior Day festivities.
