Conway, S.C. – Robert Morris University's Laura Coulter and UConn's Marybeth Olson were both nearly unhittable Sunday at Coastal Carolina's Battle at the Beach as the Huskies eked out a 1-0 victory. The Colonials went 3-2 over the weekend, improving to 3-6 overall while the Huskies evened their season mark at 4-4 with the victory.
Coulter allowed just three hits and one run in six innings of work. The junior leaned heavily on her fielders, striking out one while inducing nine fly outs and eight ground balls. Olson was her equal but was much less democratic in her pitching approach. The Huskies hurler struck out nine and gave up just two base knocks.
UConn tallied the only run of the game in the bottom of the second. Devon Casazza made Coulter pay for one her few mistakes as she drove a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence to put the Huskies on top, 1-0.
Natalie Higgins was in the center of the Colonials two best chances to score. She reached on an error in the first and advanced to second on a two-out single by
Abrielle McCartney but was stranded there. In the third, she singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. She advanced no farther as Olson was able to pitch her way out of trouble.
Coulter set the Huskies down in order in the final three innings, but the Colonials would get just one more base runner of their own when Higgins walked in the sixth inning.
Robert Morris is off this upcoming week before they resume their spring slate in Kissimmee, Fla., on Friday, March 2, against the Czech National Team and Ball State. The double-header at the Citrus Classic is slated to start at Noon.
