Oxford, Ohio – Fort Wayne scored six times in the first inning and then cruised behind the pitching of Bailey Benefiel for a 10-1 victory over the
Robert Morris University softball team at the Miami University Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Benefiel improved to 8-5 on the season as she went 5.0 inning and allowed just three while striking out six. Lexi Smalarz had two hits and three runs batted in to pace the Mastodons.
Fort Wayne tallied four hits in the fateful first inning and crossed home six times as they batted around. They stretched the margin to seven in the second inning and tacked on three more in the fifth. The Colonials lone run came in the bottom of the fifth.
Natalie Higgins, who had two hits in the game, tripled with one out and scored when
Abrielle McCartney lifted a fly ball to left field.
The Colonials finish up play at the Miami Invitaitonal on Sunday, March 18. They'll play the 19
th-ranked Michigan Wolverines at 10:00 a.m. before finishing up with a second contest against Dayton at 3:00 p.m.
