Fairfield, Conn. – The
Robert Morris University softball team was swept at Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon losing 4-1 and 8-2 at Pioneer Park in Fairfield, Conn. The Pioneers improve to 23-15 and 6-2 in the Northeast Conference while the Colonials slip to 10-16 and 1-5 in league games.
Olivia Lorusso and
Taryn Miller each went 2-for-6 on the day. Lorusso hit a triple and had one RBI and one of Miller's two hits was a double.
Madison Riggle did the majority of work in the circle pitching 11 of the team's 12 innings. She posted a 1.91 ERA on the day, allowing just three earned runs.
In game one, the Colonials lone run of the contest came off the bat of freshman
Kaitlyn Clark who blasted her second home run in as many days cutting the SHU lead to 2-1 in the third inning. The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the first and stretched the margin to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hailey Desrosiers in the second inning. Sacred Heart tacked on two more runs, both unearned, in the sixth inning.
Desrosiers started game two with a solo homer to right center, the beginning of a five-run first for the hosts. Jennie Boisvert capped the game-deciding inning with a three-run blast of her own. The Colonials scored twice in the fifth with Lorusso tripling in
Bridget Guiney.
Briana Bunner then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that brought in the aforementioned Lorusso. The Pioneers got three more runs in the sixth, two unearned, to cap the scoring at 8-2.
Robert Morris is scheduled to take on Youngstown State in a non-conference doubleheader at North Athletic Complex Wednesday, April 25. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
