Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris University women's lacrosse rolled to a 14-4 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon, setting several records en route to the Colonials first win in Northeast Conference play.
Senior midfielder
Dana Davis collected two ground balls, eclipsing the program's all-time mark of 171 set by Colleen O'Donnell '12, totaling 173 for her career.
Sophomore defender
Kelly Colegrove was in record-setting form as well, causing an RMU single-game record 7 turnovers in the Colonials strong defensive effort against the Mountaineers.
Colegrove also collected a pair of ground balls, while fellow sophomore defenders
Madison Burke (3 GB, 3 CT) and
Shea McArdle (2 GB, 3 CT) put forth solid numbers, helping RMU hold Mount St. Mary's to a season-low four goals and twelve shots on goal. For McArdle, the three caused turnovers mark a career-high, and Burke's three ground balls match a career-best number.
The four goals allowed by RMU is the lowest total since April 26, 2015, a 12-4 victory over LIU Brooklyn, and a career-best mark for sophomore goalkeeper
Katelyn Miller, who made eight saves in her fifth win of the season. Robert Morris totaled 25 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers in the victory, winning 11 of 20 draw controls.
It wasn't just the defense getting it done, the Colonials offense impressed with 14 goals, its second-highest goals total of the season, also racking up 8 assists.Â
Career-highs were passed out like week-old leftover Easter candy. Junior
Sophia Eureka led the Colonials in scoring with four goals and an assist, setting a career-high with a five-point game and matching a career-high with four goals, the second hat trick of her career.
Sophomore
Melanie Gandy celebrated her birthday tying a career-high four-point effort, with two goals and two assists. Sophomore
Clio Kerr also posted a career-high four-point game with three goals and an assist, her second career hat trick. Kerr's pair of player-up goals are tied for second most in a single-game in RMU history.Â
Freshman
Madison Griffin matched a career-high with two points on two goals, with a career-high two draw controls as well. Senior
Niki Grillon matched a career-high with a pair of assists, her fifth career-two-point effort.Â
Robert Morris mounted a 5-2 lead in the first half with Eureka notching her hat trick in a span of 20:40. Eureka's first goal came on a free position shot, but the rest were all assisted.
"I couldn't have done it without my teammates," said Eureka after the game, now matching Davis to lead the Colonials with 16 goals this season.
Gandy and Griffin were the other first half goal-scorers, while Grillon and junior
Shannon Lynch dished assists, along with RMU's assists leader this season, Gandy (11).
Lynch and Griffin scored the first two goals of the second half to put the Colonials up 7-2, before Mount St. Mary's Carly Miller scored her second of the game to make it 7-3.
RMU went on a six-goal tear to take a commanding 13-3 lead and start the running clock with 8:20 to play. Kerr scored all three of her goals in that stretch, while Eureka added her fourth and Davis scored a pair. Four of the six goals in that stretch were assisted, with helpers from Grillon, Gandy, Eureka and freshman
Hannah Miller.
The Mountaineers stopped the running clock with a goal with 4:46 to play, before Gandy scored her second of the game with 2:53 to play, and Robert Morris ran out the clock to wrap up the 14-4 victory.
The defense not only put up impressive numbers but also put up two shutout streaks of 18:37 and 18:38, forcing the Mountaineers into a 90-second shot clock violation early in the first half, to set the tone for the rest of the game.
"We really wanted to focus on ourselves today and not the opponent," said Colegrove. "I think we did a really good job of taking care of the ball on both ends."
Every available player on the Colonials roster was on the field for action, including the first career appearance for freshman defender
Caroline Downham.Â
Robert Morris (5-7) moves to 1-1 in Northeast Conference play and has a single game on tap this week, traveling to face in-state rival Saint Francis on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at DeGol Field in Loretto, Pa.
