Lewisburg, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to Bucknell in overtime this evening.
Robert Morris (0-5-1, 0-0-0 NEC) owned a 9-3 shots on goal advantage, but went down to 10 men early in the overtime frame. Bucknell (2-2-1, 0-0-0 PL) found the winner with 21 seconds remaining in the first extra stanza.
Oeyvind Skjesol nearly opened the scoring in the second minute, missing the mark on a header from Lorenzo Guagneli's corner kick. The Bison struck back with a Bernie Wright attempt in the sixth minute, forcing Winter Fondi to make a save.
The back-and-forth theme for nearly the entire first half before the hosts went ahead in the 44th minute with a Stefan Krystman goal.
RMU pushed for an equalizer early in the second half, generating a shot on net in the 48th minute from Owen Pearce. The Colonials earned a corner kick five minutes later, which they took advantage of, as Pearce found Skjesol with his cross for the tying goal. The sophomore defender headed home the corner just inside the left post to open his scoring account.
The visitors kept momentum after Skjesol's equalizer as they generated three corner kicks and a pair of shots on target by Cristian Palermo. After a misfire by Bucknell, RMU saw attempts by Noah Elamin, Guagneli, and Skjesol miss the mark.
Palermo was stopped again in the 88th minute, and the Colonials blocked a Nick King shot with 22 seconds left in regulation.
After Zac Sherman forced an Ott save, the senior forward was assessed a red card for a foul after the play, leaving the Colonials dwindled to 10 men for the second time this season.
Despite the numbers disadvantage, RMU again put another shot on net in the 99th minute when Christian Coridon was stopped by Ott. The ensuing corner kick was cleared away and turned into a counter-attack, one that would ultimately prove to be successful as Bernie Wright slotted home a feed from Nick King.
Palermo generated a game-high three shots on goal.
Robert Morris returns home to play its second of three consecutive Keystone State foes, as it hosts La Salle at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15.
