RMU Earns Sweep At St. Francis Brooklyn

Colonials rally in each set to move to 9-0 in NEC

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University volleyball team continued a four-match road trip Saturday by earning a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-20) victory over St. Francis Brooklyn. The Colonials improved to 19-3 overall, including a perfect 9-0 in the Northeast Conference
 
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

Trailing, 21-19, in the opening set, the Colonials scored the final six points to grab the victory. Emily Devlin began the rally with a kill, which was followed by a pair of kills from Lauren Kolenik. Allena Carmody was a key component for RMU, as she picked up a service ace that gave the Colonials a 23-21 edge.
 
COMEBACK KIDS

St. Francis Brooklyn (9-13 / 3-5 NEC) didn't wilt after the first set, owning leads of 11-6, 16-11 and 19-14 in the second set. Robert Morris rallied again, closing to within 19-17 and forcing the Terriers to call timeout. Lauren Montgomery followed with a kill to give SFC a 20-17 lead, but RMU closed with an 8-2 rally to win the second set. Middle blocker Emma Granger posted a pair of kills that snapped a 22-22 tie, and Carmody notched another service ace to seal the set victory.
 
IN THE MIDDLE

Junior Maria Alfano paced the Colonials with 12 kills and also notched four blocks in the win over St. Francis Brooklyn. She notched just two errors in 28 total attempts to finish the match with a .357 attack percentage. Granger chipped in seven kills, four blocks and a pair of service aces.
 
SET THREE

The Colonials jumped in front, 3-0, before falling behind, 5-4, setting up a back-and-forth affair for third consecutive set. Robert Morris gained control with a four-point rally that opened up a 17-12 advantage. Alfano came through with the final four kills of the match for RMU to seal the sweep.
 
SEVEN STRAIGHT SETS

RMU has won seven of its nine NEC matches in straight sets and has suffered just two set losses in its nine matches overall in league play. In league action, the Colonials are 5-1 (.833) in sets decided by three points or less and 11-1 (.817) in sets decided by five points or less.
 
UP NEXT

The Colonials conclude a four-match road swing by traveling east on Route 22 Wednesday, Oct. 30, to Loretto, Pa., for a 7:00 p.m. match against Saint Francis U. Robert Morris opens the month of November with four straight matches at the UPMC Events Center, beginning Friday, Nov. 1, against Bryant.
