RMU Runs Winning Streak to 15 in Sweep at FDU

The Colonials have won in three sets 15 times this season, and are a victory shy of their seventh-ever unbeaten NEC season

Hackensack, N.J.The Robert Morris University volleyball team picked up its 15th three-set victory of the season, sweeping Fairleigh Dickinson (25-23, 25-14, 25-15) this evening in Northeast Conference (NEC) action from the Rothman Center.

Robert Morris (25-3, 15-0 NEC) also extended its winning streak to 15 matches, one shy of tying the program record of 16 established by the 2001 team. The Colonials hit .300, served six aces, dug out 71 Fairleigh Dickinson (3-26, 2-13 NEC) attacks, and totaled 8.0 team blocks.

Emma Granger recorded 16 kills on a .483 hitting percentage, adding four block assists, and an ace. Maria Alfano also reached double figures in kills with 12, converting at a .500 rate with four rejections (one solo) defensively. Lauren Kolenik and Nikolette Zanolli shared high honors in digs with 18 each, while Megan Cannon posted her fourth career double-double with 45 assists and 10 digs.

The Knights came out swinging, opening up a 6-1 lead in the first set. RMU would pull even at 11-11 with an Alfano kill, then the junior middle blocker added another to give the visitors a lead. FDU kept the Colonials near and eventually regained the advantage at 21-20, but four straight points from Granger and Alfano would put RMU back in front. An attack error ultimately gave the Colonials a 25-23 victory in the frame.

The second and third stanza did not feature the same kind of drama. RMU tallied eight of the first 10 points in the middle set in route of a 25-14 triumph, and opened up an 18-4 advantage in the final frame to win it, 25-15.

Robert Morris finishes up the regular season tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. against Long Island. A victory would give the Colonials their seventh ever unbeaten season in NEC play, and tie the program records for longest winning streak and road victories in a season.
