MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. -- Freshman goalie
Raygan Kirk stopped 17 shots and the
Robert Morris University women's hockey team got just enough offense to edge Lindenwood 2-0 in a College Hockey America contest Friday night at Centene Community Ice Center.
RMU remained unbeaten and untied in CHA play with the decision, which was in doubt until freshman
Joelle Fiala's empty-net goal in the final minute -- her first college tally. Kirk's shutout was her second in a row and the third for the team in 11 games.
The Colonials (5-5-1, 3-0-0 CHA) had significant edges in shot attempts (76-36) and shots on goal (30-17), but
Lexi Templeman's power-play goal 13 minutes into the first period was the only puck that got behind Lindenwood goaltender Annika Asplundh.
"We made 95-percent plays all night," head coach
Paul Colontino said. "Never 100-percent, though. Hard to finish that way."
Senior captain
Jaycee Gebhard kept up her sizzling scoring pace, assisting on both RMU goals to give her 24 points (7g, 17a) in 11 games. Gebhard also had a couple of golden scoring chances herself, but those missed looks were emblematic of the night for the Colonials attack overall.
At the same time, the power-play unit that entered the night as the sixth-best out of 41 Division I teams came through again, with Templeman depositing the rebound of defender
Sarah Lecavalier's slapper with a backhand from in front of the net.
Templeman's second goal of the year -- to go with 14 assists -- meant the Colonials have scored at least one PP goal in eight of their 11 games. They had five other opportunities to add another, but on a night when they defended well and got high-quality goaltending, one PPG was enough.
"We're sticking to the systems," said Templeman. "We work as a unit to create some 'Grade-A' opportunities. We all work so hard to create opportunities and get good puck retrieval, which allows us to spend more time with the puck."
Although RMU largely controlled play, there were a couple of moments in which Lindenwood (2-7-2, 0-3-0 CHA) nearly tied the game. But Kirk, who's now stopped 47 shots in a row, denied a short-handed breakaway late in the first period and a point-blank one-timer from Jada Burke in the closing moments of the second. The Manitoban's save percentage jumped to .922 with her fourth NCAA victory.
The Colonials will go for a second consecutive weekend sweep Saturday afternoon. They'll aim to be sharper overall after a night when they managed to skate by without their engine firing on all cylinders.
"I think it's just about having more poise with the puck and being ready to put it in the net," Templeman said. "There were a lot of chances that we missed. I think being more ready overall will benefit us tremendously tomorrow."
Saturday's faceoff against the Lions is scheduled for 2:10 p.m. Eastern time at the brand-new Centene Center, also the practice home of the NHL's St. Louis Blues.
