Robert Morris Opens Indoor Season at YSU

Meet first of four for Colonials in 2019-20 at Youngstown State

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University track & field team opened its 2019-20 indoor season Friday by taking part in the YSU Icebreaker at the Watts and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) in Youngstown, Ohio.

In the field events, junior Kaitlyn Hawkins posted a personal record in the pole vault, clearing 3.57 meters (11'8.50"). She was one five student-athletes to clear the height at the YSU Icebreaker and did so on her second attempt after clearing both 3.27 and 3.42 meters, respectively.

In the jumps, sophomore Zoe Roush finished with the top leap for the Colonials in the long jump at 5.35 meters (17'6.75").

The YSU Icebreaker served as the NCAA Division I collegiate debut for five Colonials. Freshman Ke'Aijhan Strong posted times of 8.07 seconds in the 60-meter dash and 26.18 in the 200-meter dash, respectively.

RESULTS: YSU Icebreaker (12/6/19)

Freshman Lauren Chappell posted a leap of 5.03 meters (16'6") in the long jump as well as a time of 9.47 meters in the 60-meter hurdles. Fellow rookie Elicia Moore, meanwhile, clocked in at 2:24.78 in the 800-meter.

In the weight throw, junior Yessie Valencia posted the top distance for Robert Morris in the event with a toss of 14.80 meters (48'6.75"), while rookie Alijah Caul posted a toss of 12.61 meters (41'4.50"). Caul also posted a throw of 12.23 meters (40'1.50") in her collegiate debut in the shot put, while Valencia recorded a heave of 10.13 meters (33'1.25") in the same event.

Leading the way for the Colonials in the shot put was junior Estelle Katende, who finished sixth with a throw of 12.73 meters (41'9.25"). Katende also posted a toss of 13.03 meters (42'9") in the weight throw. Sophomore Taylor Mears, meanwhile, recorded distances of 11.80 meters (38'8.75") in the weight throw and 10.09 meters (33'1.25") in the shot put, respectively.

Also on the track for RMU, senior Anna Chasovskaia recorded a time of 60.60 in the 400-meter dash, while Roush competed in the 60-meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 8.24 seconds. In distance events, sophomore Sonnie Sauvinsky posted a time of 12:12.38 in the 3,000-meter to finish fourth.  

The YSU Icebreaker marked the first of four meets for Robert Morris at Youngstown State for the 2019-20 indoor campaign. The Colonials return Friday, Jan. 17, to take part in the YSU Invitational.
