MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Following a thrilling win over Canisius to open the 2019 home schedule, the
Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team received a pair of individual honors from the Northeast Conference on Monday.
Juniors
Mackenzie Gandy and
Katelyn Miller were named the NEC Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for their prime performances last Wednesday against the visiting Golden Griffins.
Gandy scored three goals and assisted on three others, factoring in on all three of RMU's second-half goals as the Colonials (2-0) forced overtime. Gandy, who missed most of her sophomore season due to injury, leads the Colonials in points (eight) and assists (four) and her four goals are tied with twin sister
Melanie Gandy for the most on the team. Mackenzie finished second on the team in scoring as a freshman, scoring 29 goals and 56 points.
Miller, meanwhile, continued her outstanding start to the season with 11 saves against Canisius, including a free-position stop on the first possession of overtime that made
Sophia Eureka's sudden-death game-winner possible. Miller leads the NEC with a .529 save percentage and ranks second in the league in goals-against average (7.70). Miller has started every RMU game since the beginning of her freshman year, putting together a 38-game start streak.
The Colonials will look for their first 3-0 start in five years when Liberty comes to town for a 3 p.m. Wednesday start. Admission at Joe Walton Stadium is free.
