MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The Gandy Family trophy case has grown more crowded over the past several weeks, with twin sisters Mackenzie and
Melanie Gandy off to terrific offensive starts for the
Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team.
On Monday, Melanie continued the trend by
picking up the Northeast Conference's Player of the Week designation after a well-rounded two-game burst. The junior attacker from Baltimore accounted for 13 total points (8g, 5a) last week as RMU (5-2) controlled a pair of games against non-conference foes Gardner-Webb and St. Bonaventure.
Melanie's prize means that a Gandy has won NEC Player of the Week three times in the first five weeks of the 2019 season. Mackenzie has already earned the honor twice while compiling team bests in goals (16), assists (11) and points (27).
But Melanie isn't far behind after factoring in on 13 of RMU's 38 goals last week. Her six goals last Wednesday against Gardner-Webb were two shy of the program recod and set a new career best for the Delaney High School graduate.
Melanie followed up that performance by setting a different career mark, assisting on five goals in Saturday's road drubbing of St. Bonaventure. Gandy tossed in a couple more goals to pull her season totals to 15 goals and 23 total points.
In addition to the Gandys' three combined weekly awards, junior midfielder
Clio Kerr and junior goalie
Katelyn Miller have each been named Defensive Player of the Week once this season.
Robert Morris will try to stretch its winning streak to three games this Saturday when Radford pays a visit to Joe Walton Stadium at noon. As always, admission is free.
