Colonials' Comeback At Bucknell Earns Third Win Of Season

Eight-goal second half keys largest offensive output in opening four games

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Behind an eight-goal second half, the Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team turned away a game Bucknell side on Saturday afternoon, prevailing 13-10 on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field.

The Colonials (3-1) trailed 7-4 at the intermission after the hometown Bison (1-4) netted six goals in a row to close the opening half, but a 9-1 run coming out of the locker room clinched a bounce-back win for the visitors.

The way RMU earned its second road win of 2019 ran counter to an early trend. Prior to Saturday, the Colonials had been dead even in goal differential (13-13) after halftime in the first three games.

"We just focused on doing the little things better and playing our game," head coach Katrina Silva said. "Love the fight in this team."

As has been the case in the early going this season, the junior Gandy twins catalyzed the RMU attack. Mackenzie maintained her team points lead with a third consecutive hat trick, plus a pair of assists. Melanie drilled home three goals, too, getting her second hat trick of the season on just five shots.

Junior midfielder Clio Kerr continued her staunch all-around play as well, leading the Colonials with four caused turnovers and seven draw controls to go with her fourth goal. Plus, senior Sophia Eureka stretched her goal streak to four games to go with a pair of assists.

RMU's largest statistical advantage was in shots, where it outpaced Bucknell 34-25. In their previous two games, against physical opponents in Canisius and Liberty, the Colonials had mustered just 36 total shots.

"We came out hot and even though were cooled off a bit, we fought back when it counted," Silva said. "I think when the team cares more about each other than their own stats, good things are bound to happen."

Junior goalie Katelyn Miller allowed 10 goals for the second consecutive game, but her eight-save performance Saturday included five on Bucknell free-position attempts. Miller has now started 40 straight games to begin her NCAA career.

Next up, RMU will host a home game for the third straight Wednesday, taking on city rival Duquesne. First draw at Joe Walton Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. Admission is free.
