Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University softball team continued play in the Runnin' Bulldog Softball Tournament Saturday in Boiling Springs, N.C., dropping a pair of contests at Brinkley Stadium. The Colonials fell to the host Bulldogs, 12-4, before falling to Colgate, 3-0.
GAME 1 • @ Gardner-Webb • L, 4-12 (5)
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Colonials struck for four runs in the top of the first inning against the Bulldogs by hitting their second grand slam of the young 2020 season. RMU opened the game with three consecutive singles off Andrea Lyon, as sophomore
Brittney Seibert, junior
Alaina York and senior
Natalie Higgins loaded the bases. Two batters later
Briana Bunner connected for the slam, giving Robert Morris an early 4-0 advantage.
JUMPING IN FRONT
Gardner-Webb scored in each of its five innings, tying the game in the bottom of the third, 4-4, with a pair of runs before scoring five in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning. Despite allowing the grand slam in the first inning, Lyon collected three hits in the contest and drove in five, connecting for two home runs. She hit a solo shot in the third, and her two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth gave the Bulldogs the victory.
HITTING HIGGINS
Higgins hit safely in her six consecutive game with her first inning single against the Bulldogs, but Robert Morris could only muster two more hits off Lyons. Freshman
Danielle Jason singled to open the fourth inning, while senior
Taryn Miller followed with a single of her own. The Colonials couldn't cash in, however, stranding Jason on third and Miller on second.
