Bats Break Out In Win Over S.C. State

Riggle collects three hits, including grand slam, in five-inning victory

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University softball team continued play in the Blue Hose Invitational Saturday with a 15-2 victory over South Carolina State at the PC Softball Complex in Clinton, S.C.
 
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

RMU (2-1) scored its most runs in two seasons under head coach Jexx Varner in the win over the Lady Bulldogs, compiling 13 hits. The Colonials scored a pair in the first, five in the second and seven in the third inning to take control. Senior Madison Riggle was a force at the plate for Robert Morris, finishing 3-for-3 with two runs, four RBI and her third career home run. It marked the second multi-hit effort of her career.
 
LEADING OFF

The Colonials scored a pair of runs in the first inning, as senior Natalie Higgins hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored sophomore Brittney Seibert, who opened the game with a walk. Junior Alaina York, who singled, came around for RMU's second run courtesy of an RBI single by sophomore Madison Shiderly.
 
SLAM DUNK

Riggle provided the big blow in the second inning for Robert Morris, connecting for a grand slam that gave the Colonials a 7-0 advantage. RMU added seven more in the third inning, as Higgins plated a pair with an RBI double to left, while senior Briana Bunner provided an RBI single, Shiderly a sac fly and freshman Avery Winchell an RBI double for her first collegiate hit.
 
A PERFECT CIRCLE

The offensive explosion made a winner out of sophomore Katie Gasvoda, who allowed two runs in five innings of work. She allowed five hits in garnering her first collegiate victory.
 
BALANCED LINEUP

Eight of the nine starters for Robert Morris recorded at least one hit in the victory over South Carolina State, as Seibert joined Riggle with a multi-hit effort, finishing 2-for-3 with three runs. She also stole a base. Higgins finished 1-for-3 with two runs and three RBI, while sophomore Erika Bell, who pinch hit in the bottom of the third and stayed on to play left field, walked and doubled, scoring both times.
 
UP NEXT

RMU concludes play in the Blue Hose Invitational Sunday, Feb. 9, with a 10:00 a.m. game against Norfolk State.
