Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University athletic department mourns the loss of former men's lacrosse student-athlete Jack Toomb, who passed away on Monday night.
Toomb, 23, was a cornerstone of Robert Morris' 2018 and 2019 Northeast Conference (NEC) championship sides as a long-stick midfielder and defender. Following graduation, he returned to his high school alma mater, Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, to serve as an assistant lacrosse coach.
"Jack was a terrific competitor but an even better person," said Robert Morris men's lacrosse head coach Andrew McMinn. "His positive, fun loving personality was infectious and he therefore touched more lives than most of us ever will. There is no way of explaining how much he will be missed but, because of who he was, he will continue to carry on and impact us in so many ways."
"Jack's passing is a heartbreaking loss for the Robert Morris lacrosse and athletic family," said Chris King, the Vice President & Director of Athletics at Robert Morris. "Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to Jack's family at this time. The RMU lacrosse coaches, teammates, and athletic department will greatly miss Jack, though he will always be a part of our family."
A three-time All-NEC Second Team selection, Toomb ranks third all-time at RMU in games played (65), fourth in groundballs (210), and fifth in groundballs per game (3.23) and caused turnovers (64). He recorded at least 44 groundballs in each of his four seasons, establishing a best of 68 in 2017, and eclipsed 20 caused turnovers with 21 as a senior.
Toomb was a key component in the Colonials' rise to national prominence, as he and the rest of the Class of 2019 captured the program's first two NEC Tournament championships and subsequent NCAA Tournament berths. He provided seven groundballs, a caused turnover, and an assist in RMU's back-to-back title game triumphs against Saint Joseph's (2018) and Hobart (2019), and tallied three groundballs and a caused turnover in the 2018 NCAA Tournament win at Canisius. Toomb closed his career by participating in the 2019 USILA (United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association) Senior All-Star Game, becoming one of 10 Colonials to receive that honor.
At Moeller, he earned a bevy of recognition including First Team All-Midwest, All-Region, All-State, Under Armour All-America, and U.S. Lacrosse All-America.
Visitation is scheduled for Mueller Funeral Home in Mason, Ohio on Saturday, March 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. When school resumes at Moeller, it will hold a memorial service and celebration of life.
