PITTSBURGH, Pa. The Robert Morris University women's basketball team fell to 3-4 on the season Thursday night with a 63-44 loss to the visiting Green Bay Phoenix at the UPMC Events Center. The loss drops the Colonials to 1-2 in Horizon League play on the year.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Colonials came out with the hot hand in a big way Thursday, knocking down four of their five first threes and seven of their first nine overall from the field to build up an early 18-6 lead. Back-to-back-to-back triples from
Esther Castedo,
Simone Morris and
Nina Augustin set the Colonials off and running, however a patient but efficient Phoenix squad slowly managed to work their way back into things, forcing RMU into a pair of turnovers before closing out the first quarter on an 8-2 run to grab a 20-18 lead after ten. Four threes for Green Bay in the second quarter helped the visiting side grow its lead to 36-22 before the opening half was out.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
With the loss to Green Bay, RMU falls to 2-1 on the season against first-time opponents. They had previously been a perfect 2-0 after recording wins against Canisius and Detroit Mercy in their first ever matchups earlier this season.
QUOTABLES
"We told the team it was one of the best starts we've ever had in the first five minutes since I've been at RMU, but then I thought we started to press our shots a little bit too much and lost track of what got us those shots. Green Bay is a championship level team year-in and year-out in the Horizon League, and they proved why. They never seemed to buckle under anything that we did." - Associate Head Coach
Scott Schneider
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
After building up a 14-point lead to end the first half, Green Bay kept its foot on the gas in the second, keeping its foot on the gas and outscoring the Colonials 16-8 in the final frame to take a 52-30 lead into the final ten minutes of action. Nearly half of those 16 came from the charity stripe as the Phoenix went a clinical 7-7 at the foul line in the third.Â
NEXT UP
The Colonials have a quick turnaround before hosting the Milwaukee Panthers on Saturday, December 4 at 1:00 P.M. AT UPMC Events Center.
