UDM Knocks Off Colonials In Series Opener

Titans shoot 50.8 percent (30-for-59) from field in win over RMU

Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU men's basketball team opened its final weekend of regular-season action Friday with an 85-74 loss to Detroit Mercy at Calihan Hall. The Colonials dip to 4-13 (.235) overall on the 2020-21 season, including 3-11 (.214) in the Horizon League.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Titans (10-9 / 9-6 HL) owned their biggest lead, 63-44, with 13:13 to play, but RMU chipped away before using a 15-4 run to close to within 73-66. Freshman guard Kam Farris capped the charge with a three-pointer and was fouled on the play by Marquell Fraser. UDM called timeout to try and ice Farris, but the rookie was able to convert the four-point play. On the next possession, Antoine Davis drew a foul and went to the stripe, knocking down both to help stem the tide for Detroit Mercy. RMU suffered a turnover after the pair of free throws from Davis, and Chris Brandon capitalized for the Titans with a jumper to push the lead back to double digits, 77-66.

FINISHING STRONG

Senior forward Charles Bain produced the best offensive performance of his senior season Friday against Detroit Mercy, scoring a season-high 19 points to pace RMU. He shot 8-for-16 from the field and was true on each of his three attempts at the free-throw line while also grabbing four rebounds. He was one of four Colonials to score in double figures.

THE OPENING RUN
Tied, 13-13, after a three-point play from Bain, the Titans used a 16-6 surge to open up a 29-19 advantage at the 9:27 mark of the first half. Kuol Bol opened the salvo with a three-pointer as UDM nailed a trio of triples during the run. Noah Waterman connected from deep and Willy Isiani capped the surge with a three-pointer of his own, while Waterman added a three-point play with a layup and free throw after a foul by Bain.

SENIOR STRONG

Senior guard Jon Williams, despite picking up two fouls within the first five minutes, continued his hot shooting Friday in the series opener against Detroit Mercy. He knocked down five of his nine attempts from the field, including a 4-for-8 performance from beyond the arc, in reaching double figures for the eighth time in the last nine games. He finished with 14 points and over his last nine contests is averaging 12.6 points and 4.9 assists while owning an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.88. He also moved into eighth place all-time at RMU for career three-pointers with 205, leapfrogging both Derek Coleman (205) and Matty McConnell (202).
