Throwers Continue Upward Trend At Mountaineer Classic

Hunter, Valencia earn gold for second time to open 2021 outdoor season

Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU track & field team continued its outdoor campaign Friday by taking part in the Mountaineer Classic in Morgantown, W.Va., at The Track & Field Complex at Mylan Park.

Junior Keturah Hunter opened the competition for the Colonials by winning her second individual championship in as many meets in the hammer throw Thursday, claiming gold with a toss of 52.82 meters (173'3"). Senior Yessie Valencia earned silver in the same event, finishing with a distance of 46.89 meters (153'10").

Valencia joined Hunter in winning her second individual championship in as many meets Friday by winning the discus. She posted a throw of 47.27 meters (155'1"), outlasting her fellow senior teammate Estelle Katende, who finished second at 46.96 meters (154'1"). The top two marks in the event came on the final throws of the event for both Valencia and Katende.

Elsewhere in the field events for RMU, junior Tara Gologram won gold in the long jump with a leap of 5.51 meters (18'1"). Gologram owned the top distance of 5.50 meters after her third attempt, then sealed the victory on her sixth and final leap.

In the shot put, Katende posted a distance of 12.02 meters (39'5.25") to claim bronze, while Valencia finished fourth at 11.90 meters (39'0.50"). In the same event, sophomore Alijah Caul placed seventh with a throw of 11.30 meters (37'1").

Also claiming a top five finish for the Colonials in the throws was freshman Sierra Hillman, who recorded a distance of 32.07 meters (105'2") in the javelin to finish fifth. Finishing one spot behind Hillman in the event was senior Harley Stuebgen, who posted a toss of 31.44 meters (103'2") to tie for sixth with Sophie Yantko of Ohio.

Sophomore Lauren Chappell took home bronze in the high jump thanks to a leap of 1.45 meters (4'9"). She cleared the height on her first attempt, while Gologram also cleared 1.45 meters but on her second attempt.

On the track, freshman Chloe Stanfield finished third in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 27.09 seconds. Also finishing third for the Colonials in the sprints was fellow rookie Gracie Parker, who clocked in at 15.38 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. Parker also claimed fifth in the 100-meter dash at 13.21.

On deck for RMU is its first home competition since 2014. The Colonials will host the RMU Invitational at the RMU Island Sports Center Friday, April 17.
