Colonials Conclude YSU Mid-Major Invitational

Todero, Katende each earn silver for RMU in final day of meet

Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU track & field team concluded action in the YSU Mid-Major National Invitational Saturday at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) on the campus of Youngstown State University.
 
SILVER SURFER
Graduate student Estelle Katende earned silver Saturday in the shot put for the Colonials, posting a throw of 14.09 meters (46'2.75"). She trailed only Molly Radcliffe of the host Penguins, who won the individual championship at 14.28 meters. Katende entered action this weekend in the YSU Mid-Major National Invite as the No. 1 seed in the Horizon League in the shot put after posting a distance of 14.31 meters (46'11.5") in the indoor opener, which also came at WATTS, as part of the YSU Icebreaker (12/3/21).
 
JUMP AROUND
Joining Katende in earning silver Saturday for RMU was freshman Rayna Todero, who posted a personal best in the triple jump thanks to a leap 11.19 meters (36'8.5") to finish second. Fellow rookie Alex Pearson finished 11th in the same event with a distance of 10.34 meters (33'11").  
 
TRACK ME DOWN
Elicia Moore was one of 75 entries in the 400-meter dash heading into the YSU Mid-Major, and the junior claimed a top 10 finish, crossing the finish line with a time of 59.62 seconds to finish eighth. Also earning eighth for the Colonials Saturday was freshman Hannah McDanel, who posted a time of 26.07 seconds in the 200-meter dash. McDanel also took home the top time for the Colonials in the 60-meter dash at 8.10 seconds, which was good enough for 18th individually. In addition to the performance from McDanel in the 60-meter, senior Tara Gologram finished at 8.11 seconds to claim 20th.

RELAY REACTION
The RMU 4x400-meter relay team posted its best time of the 2021-22 indoor campaign Saturday, finishing at 4:06.81 to finish fifth. McDanel ran the opening leg of the relay, and she was joined by sophomore Rio Strosnider, freshman Bethany Naughton and Moore. The Colonials shaved almost four seconds off their best time of the year, which came at the same facility as part of the YSU Icebreaker.  
 
THE DISTANCE TO HERE
Freshman Laura Croco competed in the mile Saturday for the Colonials, clocking in at 5:28.58 to finish 16th. She shaved over five seconds off her previous personal best with the performance. In the 800-meter, Strosnider posted the top time for RMU at 2:27.19.
 
UP NEXT
RMU returns to Ohio for its next competition, visiting Denison University for the Bob Shannon Invitational Saturday, Feb. 5. The regular season concludes the following weekend with the Doug Raymond National Qualifier on the campus of Kent State University.
