Late Comeback Falls Short Against Wright State

Veloso-Lima cards third goal of season; Lecuona tallies third assist this fall

Moon Township, Pa. – A late comeback by the Colonials fell just short as they dropped a 2-1 contest against Wright State on Thursday afternoon in Horizon League action at the North Athletic Complex.

With the loss, the Robert Morris University women's soccer team falls to 7-4-4 overall with a 1-4-2 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Raiders improve to 7-5-3 overall this season behind a 4-1-3 record in conference action.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Raiders took control in the opening 10 minutes as they registered two shots and three corner kicks to begin the match. Robert Morris responded when freshman Renae Mohrbacher fired back-to-back shots in the 12th minute. Wright State got on the board first at the 15:08 mark when Elise Canter took a pass from Marcella Sizer and beat the keeper to the left, 1-0. Mohrbacher looked to be the equalizer as she fired a shot to the bottom left that was saved by goalkeeper Jessika Seward. Over the next eight minutes, both teams combined for five shots and a corner kick before Mohrbacher and freshman Cali Laymon put shots on goal before the half.

In the second half, the two teams put shots on goal before the Raiders extended its lead in the 55th minute. In a fast break sequence, Canter was able to card her second goal of the match and give Wright State a 2-0 advantage. Sizer collected her second assist of the afternoon, while Olga Massombo was credited with an assist as well. The Raiders continued to pepper the net as they fired two more shots at redshirt senior keeper Isabella Bohlen, who collected both. Robert Morris cut the lead at the 63:35 mark when senior Kayla Veloso-Lima found the left side of the net, 2-1. The Colonials made one final push when freshman Malia Kearns corralled a pass in the box but saw her shot sail over the net in the 87th minute.

BACK OF THE NET
After one corner kick was tipped out of bounds, Robert Morris was awarded another and took advantage of the opportunity. Senior Gabriella Lecuona took the corner kick for RMU as she placed a ball to the far-left post that found the foot of Veloso-Lima to trim the deficit.

QUOTABLE
"Disappointed with the final result, however I thought we showed a lot of heart and competitive spirit," RMU head coach Chris Shaw said. "I feel if we continue to compete at that level, things will go our way. We have a very young team and our freshmen are continuing to learn and I think the future is very bright for RMU women's soccer."
