Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU volleyball team earns their second win in Horizon League play as they beat IUPUI 3-2. The Colonials overall record is now 9-16 (.360) during the 2022 season, and 2-11 (.154) in the Horizon League.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Starting off the night, the Colonials gathered a 6-3 lead in the first set, thanks to a kill by
Alyssa Hudak,
Page Gross and
Abby Ryan. IUPUI gained back a lead, but RMU stayed close throughout the set.
Ally Christman and
Abby Ryan earned another kill making the score 18-19 in the Jaguars favor. IUPUI pulled away and won the first set 20-25.
In set two, the play featured lots of back and forth action as the teams were tied four different times throughout the set. The Jaguars would win their last set of the match by a similar score 19-25.
After two sets, the Colonials began their reverse sweep and won the match. Here's how it happened…
Alyssa Hudak started the set with a kill, followed by a service ace by Junior
Abby Ryan.
Emma Brown produced a kill tying the match at 3-3. Down 4-7, RMU fought back with kills by
Annie Monaco and setter
Kaitlyn Brown. Later on, it would be
Emma Brown and
Abby Ryan once again spiking the ball with determination, creating a 10-9 advantage in the third set. This forced the Jaguars to use a timeout. In return,
Annie Monaco hit another two kills, giving the Colonials a commanding 19-16 lead towards set point, which caused IUPUI to use their last timeout. With the score tied 23-23, RMU used a timeout helping them reset. On the brink of being swept,
Abby Ryan and
Alyssa Hudak were poised to take the win, getting clutch kills to push the match to a fourth set.
Winning the third set 25-23, RMU held the momentum. Early on in the fourth set, both teams took leads. The score was tied five different times until IUPUI owned a 19-22 lead. Head coach
Danny Doherty used his last timeout and put together his plan efficiently, as the Colonials dominated scoring six straight points to win the set 25-22. When RMU tied the match 22-22, the home team used one last timeout, but senior
Alyssa Hudak called game and pounded down three kills, winning the set, and sending the Colonials to a fifth set.
The fifth set was all RMU, as they dominated early and pulled ahead 4-0.
Emma Brown spiked down two kills,
Abby Ryan added another service ace and another kill by
Annie Monaco forced IUPUI on their heels. RMU drove the score up 12-4 and IUPUI called a last minute timeout. RMU's veterans finished off the game as Ryan and Hudak put the match to an end with two kills, winning 15-9.
Completing the reverse sweep, RMU now owns a 5-4 all-time record against IUPUI.
HIGHLIGHTS
Overall, there were many players that put up good statistics, both offensively and defensively. Freshman setter
Kaitlyn Brown provided 47 assists and 10 digs. Junior outside hitter
Abby Ryan tied her career high in kills with 20. She did this twice before against UMES (8/27/21), and at Youngstown St. (10/7/22). Ryan also served three aces and posted eight digs.
Emma Brown was second on the team in kills with 10. Allyssa Hudak spotted nine kills and four digs, while
Annie Monaco went seven and seven.
Ally Christman scored six kills and nine digs.
Under Coach Doherty, the team has won once again in a five-set match. The Colonials are 4-1 while outscoring opponents 69-54.
Allena Carmody owns 82 digs in five games now against the Jaguars. Hudak holds 34 kills in five career games, and Monaco totals 58 kills and 39 digs in this series. As a team, RMU eclipses 1,000 kills on the season after a 61-kill performance. They sit at 1,051 kills, averaging 11.06 kills per set.
MILESTONE ALERT – Senior
Allena Carmody is now the second student-athlete for the Colonials to join the RMU 1,000-Dig Club in as many years. After her 20 dig performance, she has 1,019 career digs. Carmody is the 14
th RMU student-athlete in program history to achieve this milestone. With 371 digs this season, the libero has paced the most in one season during her career. She's played in all 95 sets for RMU this season. Head coach
Danny Doherty stated "I couldn't be happier or prouder of Allena reaching 1,000 career digs tonight. I know she wanted to do it at home but to accomplish it in a victory makes it that much sweeter for her and her teammates. She's an anchor on our back line, and it's a tremendous accomplishment."
Following tonight's match,
Annie Monaco has produced 182 kills this season which beats her career high of 176 kills last year in 2021.

"We've had our fair share of success when going five sets this year" said
Danny Doherty. "We showed some resiliency which I'm really proud of. Despite some of our matches recently not going our way, we keep battling. Tonight we broke through."
