Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU volleyball team falls to Youngstown State at home 1-3. The Colonials overall record is now 9-19 (.321) during the 2022 season, and 2-14 (.125) in the Horizon League.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
RMU returned home after a three-match road trip to the UPMC Events Center on Friday night. Starting for the Colonials was
Kaitlyn Brown,
Allena Carmody,
Ally Christman,
Jaidan Hockman,
Tatum Otolski,
Emma Brown and
Abby Ryan.
To begin the night,
Emma Brown and
Ally Christman both earned kills tying the first set, 3-3.
Emma Brown battled again adding another kill making it 5-4. Sophomore
Tatum Otolski joined the action as she spiked down one herself making it 7-6. As both teams continued to swap points, the first set showed a tie score, 10 times on the stat sheet. The Penguins advanced 7-8 and would remain tied or in the lead to finish out the set winning 22-25 over the Colonials. In the first set, Ryan led the team in kills with four and Carmody collected the most digs on the floor with nine.
Moving to set two, RMU got off to a slow start, falling behind 1-6, but clawed their way back with five straight points making it 6-6. With a kill by Ryan and
Alyssa Hudak, RMU got right back into the game. At two different points throughout the rest of the second set, the Colonials fell behind by five points, but they stayed resilient and made the game level 24-24 after an attack error by the Penguins. YSU went on to score the next two points and win the set 24-26.

Set three would go RMU's way as they gained an early 2-0 lead with a service ace by setter
Kaitlyn Brown. The score stayed tight at 8-8. The Colonials would go on to win the next point as head coach
Danny Doherty challenged the play, claiming YSU hit the net. Doherty won the challenge successfully and
Ally Christman was awarded the kill. Before the media timeout,
Abby Ryan added another kill and the Colonials stayed ahead 15-13. Falling back 18-20, RMU refused to be swept and scored seven of the next nine points between the two teams. Thanks to four kills by
Abby Ryan, the home team won the third set 25-22.
Starting off the fourth set, Hudak spiked a kill for the Colonials, 1-0. Continuing the set, RMU was behind until they tied it up 17-17, as fifth-year
Alyssa Hudak served an ace. They tied it up again as this time
Ally Christman spotted an ace at 19-19. In conclusion, the Penguins pulled ahead and won the fourth set, 21-25 and won the match 1-3.
HIGHLIGHTS
RMU had two different players produce double-doubles on the night as
Abby Ryan and
Ally Christman produced over ten kills and ten digs. Ryan scored 18 in both categories. The past five games, she's averaging 16.2 kills per game. Tonight, she also reached over 300 kills and 200 digs on the season. Christman paced 11 kills and 12 total digs for the Colonials. Freshman setter,
Kaitlyn Brown set up her teammates 42 times which is the second most assists in a match for her this year. As the main setter the past four matches, she's averaging 38.5 assists per match. Student-athlete of the month
Emma Brown, led all players on the court in block assists with five. After producing five kills against the Penguins, she now sits with 114 kills on the season. She's six away from what she had last season with two games remaining. Hudak was second on the team tonight in kills with 13. She's over 150 kills on the season now. Head coach
Danny Doherty successfully won two challenges tonight.
UP NEXT
RMU will finish out the season at home in the UPMC Events Center. Next weekend they will play Wright State (11/11) at 6:00 p.m. and Northern Kentucky (11/12) is senior day at 4:00 p.m.
