Highland Heights, Ky. – The Robert Morris women's basketball team dropped a 69-54 decision at Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon in Horizon League action at Truist Arena. With the loss, the Colonials fall to 6-2 overall with a 1-1 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the Norse improve to 4-4 this season behind a 1-1 mark in league action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a slow start for both teams to begin the contest as Robert Morris opened the game 1-for-7 from the floor and trailed 5-4 heading into the media timeout. Out of the timeout, Northern Kentucky went on a 10-3 run to end the half as freshman guard
Louella Allana converted on a layup to trim the deficit, 15-7 after one. The struggles continued in the second quarter for the Colonials as freshman forward
Paris Kirk connected on a layup, the Norse scored 14 consecutive points to stretch their lead to 33-9 with 2:26 remaining in the half. Freshman guard
Natalie Johnson ended the scoring drought with a triple before sophomore guard
Rebecca Dwomoh converted a three-point play as RMU trailed 38-15 after the opening 20 minutes.
The two teams traded the first four points of the second half before going over two minutes without a bucket. The Colonials would score eight of the next 12 points, led by sophomore guard
Simone Morris, who scored six of the eight points. After a layup by the Norse, Allana and Gedeon led a 7-2 run as they connected on 3-of-4 field goals from the floor to trim the Northern Kentucky lead. The Norse scored four-straight points to end the third quarter to take a 52-32 advantage. Robert Morris scored seven of nine points to begin the fourth, thanks to sophomore
Danielle Vuletich and Morris. Northern Kentucky took a 61-45 advantage later in the quarter before pulling away late.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Simone Morris paced the Colonials with 14 points and six rebounds, while converting 10-of-14 from the charity stripe.
Phoenix Gedeon registered 12 points and six boards as she was a perfect six-of-six from the free-throw line. Junior guard
Mackenzie Amalia finished with seven points, one rebound, one assist, and one steal, while sophomore guard
Alejandra Mastral collected six rebounds.
OFFENSIVE STRUGGLE
After shooting over 40.0 percent and knocking down a season best in threes two days ago, Robert Morris struggled shooting from the floor on Sunday afternoon. They finished just 15-for-56 (26.8 percent) from the floor and 18.2 percent (2-11) from behind the arc. On a high note, the Colonials continue to be consistent at the charity stripe, converting 22-of-30 (73.3 percent). It's the fourth time this season that they have shot 70.0 percent or better from the free-throw line.
