PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Robert Morris women's basketball team took down the Wright State Raiders at home Saturday night 63-54 to earn their third straight victory of the season. The win moves RMU to 12-12 on the season and 10-9 in Horizon League action.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Following a back-and-forth second quarter that saw the Colonials play catchup for much of the frame, a Natalie Villaflor layup with one second left on the clock gave the Colonials a 28-27 edge heading into the half. RMU made the most of the momentum to start the third following the buzzer-beating lay-in from Villaflor, opening the new half on a 6-0 run after Sol Castro, Esther Castedo and Ashya Klopfenstein all converted on consecutive layups, pushing it to 35-27 after a free-throw from Klopfenstein. The Colonials would not look back the rest of the game, playing the final 20 minutes with the lead.
STEAL CITY
The Colonials feasted on the Wright State offense with their press Friday night at UPMC Events Center. Robert Morris recorded an amazing 13 steals against Wright State, a new season high, and forced WSU into 17 total turnovers. The difference in ball management proved key as the Colonials converted those turnovers into 12 points while only giving up four off giveaways the other way. RMU's record for steals in game this season is 17 against Purdue Fort Wayne last weekend.
TWO HEADED MONSTER
The duo of Esther Castedo (14) and Sol Castro (15) each reached double figures in scoring this season, the tenth game this season in which they have both hit the mark. The Colonials are 6-4 on the year when Castro and Castedo both score in double figures.
QUOTABLES
"We've got a pretty young group that continues to learn each day, and Wright State threw some things at us defensively that we knew were going to be pretty new, but I thought we handled them pretty well throughout the game." - Head Coach Scott Schneider
