RMU Slays Dragons to Conclude Non-Conference Play

Bo Columbus' game-winner moves RMU to 4-4 on the season.

With a faceoff win, turned goal by sophomore transfer Bo Columbus, the Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team earned their first win over Drexel in 13 years. The 15-14 win moves the Colonials to 4-4 on the season and puts them at .500 to close out non-conference play.

MOMENTS THAT MATTER
It was a high-scoring first quarter for RMU, with Eric Swagerty opening the scoring with his first of the year. Despite trailing, 4-3, heading into the second quarter, the Colonials erupted with a 6-1 run to make it a 9-5 game. However, the Dragons managed three unanswered goals to keep the Colonials on their heels.

With a three-goal stretch to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, Corson Kealey thought he called it at the 1:49 mark, only to have Drexel turn around and tie it once more.

With 1:32 on the clock and a faceoff win, Bo Columbus took it up the field to snipe one past the goalkeeper Blumenthal to win the game.

CATS OUT OF THE SWAG
Eric Swagerty has started the last five games for RMU as a vital piece of the midfield. The Fairfax Station native scored his first career goal to open the game, followed by his first career hat trick. The sophomore was shooting at 100%, going 3-for-3 with shots on goal.

KEAL-ING IT
Corson Kealey is now riding a 17-game scoring streak, dating back to the beginning of the 2021 season. The graduate student tied his season/career high of six goals in a single contest to push the Colonials over Drexel.

GREAT GOALIES
Nate Randall and Ben Savick split time in net for RMU in the afternoon matchup. In the first half of the game, Randall made five saves. In the second half, Savick made three, including a game-saving stop at the 5:18 mark in the fourth quarter.

POINTS AND GOALS AND ASSIST STREAKS, OH MY!
In addition to Kealey's six goal performance and Swagerty's hat trick, Jake Boudreau and Taggart Clark each scored two goals, adding two and one assists, respectively. Dan Taddeo registered four points for Robert Morris in the form of a goal and three assists. Additionally, Colton Lidstone added two assists to his resume, while Blake Lori and Ben Starkey each had a helper.

BO KNOWS LACROSSE

Mercyhurst transfer Bo Columbus has been a dynamic addition to RMU's program. In addition to his game-winner, Columbus went 15-23 in the circle bringing the team's faceoff percentage to .508 on the season. For reference, the Colonials finished the 2021 season with a .409 face-off percentage.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
The Colonials have only played at Joe Walton Stadium dating back to 2019. With five home games in the books for the 2022 season, RMU sits at 3-2 at Joe Walton Stadium, winning three of their last four home games.

POST-GAME QUOTE FROM HEAD COACH CRAIG MCDONALD
"Today was a gritty win against a very talented and well-coached Drexel team. It took a full team effort for 60 minutes to earn this one. I'm proud of our players who showed great character through different adversities that came our way. We stuck together and kept pushing forward, it was a hard fought and gutsy win for our team. We are looking forward to getting back to work Monday and focus on the start of ASUN play."

UP NEXT
Robert Morris will play their first conference game as a member of the ASUN on April 2nd, as they travel to Birmingham, Michigan to take on Detroit Mercy. The game is set for 11 a.m. at Seaholm High School.
