Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU rowing team opened its 2022 spring season Sunday by taking part in the Occoquan Sprints in Fairfax Station, Va., at Sandy Run Regional Park. The Colonials braved Mother Nature, including 30 mile per hour (mph) head winds to christen their spring campaign.
FINAL FOUR
RMU had a pair of Varsity 4+ boats take part in the Occoquan Sprints, recording times of 11:43.39 and 12:16.52, respectively. The RMU Varsity 4+ boat finished third, with senior
Isabelle Neville serving as the coxswain. The second RMU Varsity 4+ boat placed fifth, with senior
Jayme Sanner the coxswain.
QUOTABLE
"I'm extremely proud of the second Varsity 4+ for pushing all the way through the finish line during one of the toughest racing conditions I've experienced," Sanner said. "The rowers were able to stay focused on our race plan and stay strong in the fight against the wind. The second Varsity 4+ has a lot of opportunities to grow throughout the spring season, and I'm excited to see how we progress."
EIGHT IS ENOUGH
In its first action of 2022, the RMU Varsity 8 claimed bronze with a time of 9:43.80. The Colonials trailed only Loyola (Md.) and George Mason, and Sanner also served as the coxswain. Also finishing third in its first race of 2022 was the second RMU Varsity 8, which clocked in with a time of 10:44.50, with sophomore
Sebastiana Lopez serving as coxswain.
QUOTABLE
"Despite the crazy weather conditions, we did a great job of staying focused on our own race," senior
Madyson Orlando. "We had a clean start and maintained as much speed as we could into the wind. I'm proud of us for not giving up. The new boat definitely helped. I can't wait to race in calmer water!"
UP NEXT
April showers bring May flowers. Hopefully the clouds will part and the Colonials will have calmer waters Saturday, April 16, when RMU takes part in the Kerr Cup in Philadelphia, Pa.
