Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU softball team concluded a three-game series with Portland State Saturday, dropping a 4-0 decision in Hillsboro, Ore., at the Gordon Faber Rec Complex. The Vikings took two of three from the Colonials, with the RMU dipping to 10-3 (.769) overall during the 2022 season.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
For the second consecutive day Olivia Grey got the nod in the circle for Portland State (11-7) and once again held the Colonials in check, allowing just three hits and working around four walks in improving to 8-1 (.889) overall this season. RMU was not without its chances, however. Freshman
Alaina Koutsogiani opened the game with a double to right, but she was stranded after Grey was able to strike out the next three batters. The Colonials also had two runners on with one out in the top of the third after sophomore
Julia Ehrman walked and Koutsogiani laid down a bunt single. Grey worked out of the jam, getting outfielder
Alaina York to fly out to left before retiring the side with a groundout from
Taylor Rhinehart.
HOME COOKING
Portland State got on the board in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI double down the left field line from Shea Garcia that scored Emily Johansen, who opened the inning with a free pass off RMU rookie hurler
Madison DeVault. Paetynn Lopez connected for second home run in as many days in the bottom of the third, a solo shot, and Logan Riggenbach provided an RBI in the bottom of the sixth that capped the scoring.
JAMMING
Senior
Erika Bell opened the top of the fourth inning by drawing a walk off Grey, and after freshman
Jess Matheny came on to pinch run, she advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore
Charlotte Grover followed with a single, giving the Colonials two on in an attempt to erase a 3-0 deficit. Grey buckled down to get out of the jam, striking out freshman
Anna Resnik before getting rookie
Logan Black to fly out to center. Grey ended the threat by getting senior
Brittney Seibert to ground out to short, forcing Grover at second base.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Koutsogiani finished 2-for-3 out of the leadoff spot for the Colonials, with Grover logging the other base knock for RMU. Grey struck out nine for Portland State, with Grover and Ehrman the only Colonials she didn't set down on strikes. DeVault allowed three earned runs in 3.1 innings in falling to 3-1, while sophomore
Jane Garver struck out three in 2.2 frames for RMU.
