PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Robert Morris women's lacrosse team extended its MAC winning streak to 17 straight games Saturday, taking down the visiting Kent State Golden Flash 15-6 at Joe Walton Stadium. The victory lifts the Colonials to 7-0 in the MAC and 7-6 overall on the season.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Colonials used a clinical performance in the first quarter to take control of the Flash early Saturday, rolling a 5-0 lead after the first 15 minutes into a 9-3 lead after the first half. Julia Koterwas kicked things off less than a minute off the opening draw, beating KSU keeper Taylor Monturo with 14:11 to play in the opening quarter. Jordan Anderson and Gianna Anthony made it a 3-0 deficit before Kelsey Nelson and Colleen Tifft made it five goals for RMU from five different goal-scorers. A number of huge saves from Jamie Keller, including a tough stop on a free-position attempt, helped to keep the RMU momentum rolling before another quick goal from Tifft to start the second coupled with Koterwas' second of the day made it 7-0. Kent State finally managed to stop the bleeding with their first goal of the game, however RMU added two more before the half was out to take a 9-3 lead into the locker rooms.
RING SEASON
The Colonials capped off their 17th straight MAC win with a special post-game Championship Ring ceremony honoring the 2021 squad that captured the inaugural MAC women's lacrosse championship as well as the first conference championship in program history. RMU ran the table at 10-0 in league play a season ago en-route to their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance, finishing 14-3 overall.
QUOTABLES
"The first quarter we were really on fire, and then Kent took a great time out and managed to flip it around a bit and we didn't respond very well at first. But, credit to our girls, they settled in. We're young, and that's one of the things we're still improving on, but we fought through it and found a way to get back on. I thought we played pretty good defensively and Jamie [Keller] made some huge saves when we needed her so that was great to see too." - Head Coach Katrina Silva
"It was great to see everyone from last year today, because we're showing them that we're capable of honoring their legacy. That's really important to us, it shows them what kind of family we are. To see them out here cheering and supporting everyone was amazing." - Katrina Silva
TEAM EFFORT
RMU saw eight different goal scorers find the back of the net Saturday, led by a career-high four goals and six points from Julia Koterwas that pushed her goal-scoring streak to six straight games. Tifft and Jerica Obee each scored a pair to extend their streaks to nine and eight games, respectively, while Jordan Anderson and Kelsey Nelson finished with two tallies apiece as well.
