RMU Falls Short to Milwaukee

Gedeon posts her eighth double-double of the season.

Moon Township, Pa. – In Horizon League action, the Colonials fell 72-60 to the Panthers on the road. The Colonials are now 8-10 (.444) overall, and 2-7 (.222) in conference play.
 
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Early on in Milwaukee, RMU got off to the right start with a 7-3 lead. Sophomore Rebecca Dwomoh completed a good jumper followed by two free throws made by Simone Morris, and the run finished with a trey by Alejandra Mastral. The Panthers clawed their way back to a 9-7 lead, shortly tied up 20 seconds later with two free throws made by Dwomoh. At the end of the first quarter, MKE held a 19-11 lead.
 
The Colonials went on a 10-4 run to begin the second quarter thanks to sophomore Phoenix Gedeon and freshman Louella Allana. Gedeon made two baskets and Allana made back-to-back threes. RMU was within two but MKE pulled away before the half making it a 40-28 score in favor of the home side.
 
In the third period, RMU shot well from distance. Mastral made two three-point baskets and sophomore Danielle Vuletich scored a trey. In the quarter, Mastral scored another layup and Gedeon collected four more points. After three, Milwaukee stayed in the lead 52-43.
 
The Colonials forwards persevered in the final frame. Gedeon scored eight more points along with a three-point play by Vuletich and a jumper from Simone Morris. In the end, Milwaukee put up 20 points in the final 10 minutes and won 72-60.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
As a team, RMU put forth a great effort at the foul line, going 12-for-15 (.800). The squad scored 16 points off turnovers compared to Milwaukee's 15.
 
The second half was even as both teams scored 32 points. Milwaukee outscoring RMU, 40-28 in the first half made the difference.
 
Louella Allana was perfect once again from behind the arc as she went 2-for-2 in today's game. Last game vs. IUPUI (1/14) she made all three she attempted. Leading the team in points and rebounds was Gedeon with 20 and 10. Mastral scored the second most with 11, and converted three shots from distance. She also led the team in minutes played, being on the court for 39 minutes.
 
SLATE EIGHT
Sophomore forward Phoenix Gedeon continues to produce game in and game out for the Colonials. She posted her eighth double-double of the season against the Panthers scoring 20 points and 10 caroms. In her past eight games, the Canadian has put up six double-doubles. Five of those have been against conference opponents. Since the new year, Gedeon is averaging 15.6 points and 9.4 boards per game.
 
MILESTONE UPDATE
  • With her 11-point performance, Alejandra Mastral achieved producing over 100 points this season and over 200 now in her career.
UP NEXT
The Colonials will remain in Wisconsin through the weekend as they'll face Green Bay on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 2:00 p.m. Following that game, RMU heads back home for two games next week against Northern Kentucky and Wright State at the UPMC Events Center.
