Colonials Announce 2023 Schedule

Four tournaments to open year lead to full Horizon League slate

Moon Township, Pa. – Participation in four non-conference tournaments, including the program's first visit to the Heart of Dixie, plus a full slate of Horizon League games highlights the 2023 RMU softball schedule released Wednesday.

The Colonials will open the 2023 campaign by taking part in the Runnin' Bulldog Classic in Boiling Springs, N.C., which is hosted by Gardner-Webb. RMU gets its season underway Friday, Feb. 10, with a pair of games at Brinkley Stadium. The Colonials will take on Austin Peay in their season opener  at 1:00 p.m., followed by a 3:00 p.m. first pitch against George Mason. The tournament also includes two games against Gardner-Webb and another tilt against the Patriots.

RMU returns to the Carolinas, February 24-26, to take part in the Low Country Classic, which is hosted by the College of Charleston. The Colonials will take on Rutgers to open the tournament at Patriots Point in Charleston, S.C., and will also face Syracuse twice and play a pair against the host Cougars.

March opens with the Colonials traveling to Tuscaloosa, Ala., March 3-5, to take part in the Crimson Classic Tournament at Rhoads Stadium. It marks the first venture for RMU to the Yellowhammer State in school history as the Colonials will take on Mercer twice as well as play a pair against the host Crimson Tide before wrapping up the tournament against Longwood.

The final non-conference tournament of the 2023 season comes in Cookesville, Tenn., as RMU will take part in the Tennessee Tech Tournament, March 10-12, at Tech Softball Field. The field includes Merrimack, Ohio and the host Eagles.

Horizon League play coincides with the first home games of the 2023 season for the Colonials at the North Athletic Complex. RMU welcomes Detroit Mercy for a three-game series beginning with a single game Friday, March 17, before a doubleheader Saturday, March 18. The Colonials will also host Northern Kentucky, Purdue Fort Wayne and Oakland as part of their #HLSB schedule. The only non-conference game to come at home is slated for Tuesday, April 4, with a single game against Pitt.

RMU will take to the road for three non-conference opportunities, including a doubleheader at Akron Tuesday, March 21, a three-game series at Kent State Friday, April 1, and Saturday, April 2, and a doubleheader against in-state rival Saint Francis in Loretto, Pa., Tuesday, April 18.

Led by head coach Jexx Varner, who is in his fifth season leading the Colonials in 2023, RMU finished with an overall record of 31-21 (.596) last season, including a mark of 16-9 (.640) in the Horizon League. The Colonials advanced to the championship game of the 2022 Horizon League Tournament in posting their first 30-win campaign since 2013. RMU returns five of its hitters from the starting lineup of the 2022 #HLSB title tilt as well four pitchers from its pitching staff.
