Colonials Conference Schedule Begins at Mercyhurst

Opening Face-Off
  • The Robert Morris University men's hockey team gears up for their first conference game in the Atlantic Hockey Conference, tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
  • The Colonials will be taking on Mercyhurst at their arena, located in Erie, Pa. for their third game of the campaign.
  • Opening up the season at home, RMU fell to Bowling Green, 0-3. Chad Veltri made 40 saves on the night.
  • The following day, the Colonials returned the favor, beating the Falcons, 3-0 at their place. Veltri earned his seventh career shutout in the victory.
  • Alternate captain Gavin Gulash recorded a team-high two assists in the win. Dominic Schimizzi scored the program's first official goal of the season, also being his first career goal that day.
  • McKay Hayes pounded in his first career goal on the power play. Cameron Hebert and Rylee St. Onge recorded their first points of the season, assisting Hayes on the special team's unit goal.
  • Logan Ganie scored his first goal in an RMU uniform, passing the puck into the empty net to seal the deal during last Sunday's game. Cade Townend dished out his first assist for the Colonials on that goal.
  • Between the posts, goaltender Chad Veltri was named Goaltender of the Week by the AHA in Week 1 of the season. He made 73 stops in two games against Bowling Green and recorded his first win and shutout of the year in game two of the series.
  • Heading into the 2023-24 season, the staff brought in 16 freshmen which is the largest group of first-year players in the NCAA.
  • The team also features many veterans, as there are nine graduate players. In total, the roster is set to 29 student-athletes.
  • For the new season, head coach Derek Schooley brought back Matt Nicholson as associate head coach. Ryan Durocher returns for his second stint at RMU as well as an assistant coach. Kyle Dirks joined the team as the goalie coach along with Anders Lempia as the squad's video & analytics coordinator. And, Chris Kostick remains the team's hockey operations coordinator.
  • The staff named graduate forward Rylee St. Onge as Captain of the team. Cameron Hebert, Dallas Tulik, Mitch Andres, Gavin Gulash and Luke Johnson were tabbed as Alternate Captains for the upcoming season.
  • In RMU's most recent season back in 2020-21, the Colonials finished 15-9-0 overall and were 10-5-0 in the Atlantic Hockey Conference. Qualifying for playoffs, RMU faced Niagara in the quarterfinal round, playing a best-of-three series. They won the first game in overtime, 3-2 but then fell to Niagara the next two games.

The All-Time Series vs. Mercyhurst - Overall, RMU is 17-15-9 against Mercyhurst in the series. As both teams play in the AHA conference, each program has faced off against one another, 41 times. The series has always been close, as the game has ended in overtime on 16 occasions. The first time these two sides met was in RMU's inaugural season back in 2004-05. Last time they met, RMU won 5-3 at home in January of the 2020-21 campaign. Down early in that game, behind 1-3, the Colonials climbed their way back to victory, scoring four unanswered goals to win.
 
Scouting the Lakers – So far, in the 2023-24 season, the Lakers have only played one game, losing 4-3 against Ohio State. Philip Waugh and Marko Reifenberger both scored one goal and one assist each in the loss. In goal, Owen Say made 44 saves in the game.
 
At the end of the last season, Mercyhurst finished 10-23-3 overall and were 9-14-3 in conference play. They fell to RIT in the quarterfinal round of the AHA playoffs, losing a best-of-three series in two games.
 
SCHOOLEY FROM THE START
Coaching in his 18th season at RMU, head coach Derek Schooley has been the head of the program since the inaugural season back in 2004-05. After coaching for almost two decades for the Colonials, he's amassed 276 wins. Along the journey, Schooley led the 2015 and 2016 teams to an AHA Regular Season Championship. And, in 2014, the program won the AHA Playoff Tournament and qualified for the NCAA Tournament that season.
