Princeton, N.J. – The Robert Morris University women's hockey team fell to Princeton at their home opener, 2-6. The Colonials are now 3-2-0 on the year and the Tigers start their campaign, 1-0.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Right out of the gate, the Tigers threw nine shots in the opening 10 minutes. Starting in net, sophomore
Maggie Hatch provided a stop each time as the last line of defense.
Upon the midway point of the period, the Colonials were down shorthanded. On Princeton's first power play opportunity of the game, they cashed in to take the lead.
RMU started to get their legs moving for the second half of the period. Shots over the next nine minutes were tied, 5-5.
With time almost evaporating for the period, the Tigers pounced in two quick goals late in the first period. Scoring 22 seconds apart, the home side led, 3-0 after 20 minutes.
Five minutes into the middle frame, Princeton took advantage of another power play chance, scoring on their 10
th shot of the period.
Down 0-4, RMU didn't give up and kept fighting for loose puck battles. With some work done in the corner, the puck bounced out to the center of the offensive zone. Patiently waiting at the blue line, captain
Wasyn Rice stepped up and slammed in her first goal of the season.
History repeated itself in the third period as the Tigers scored with the man advantage halfway through the third.
Closing in on the night, with about a minute left,
Shailynn Snow and
Alaina Giampietro both pressed forward to the blue line in the defensive zone, causing a turnover. Heading down the ice on a breakaway, Giampietro's pass assisted Snow all alone on the other side of the rink. Her shot went five-hole past the keeper for her second goal of the year.
In the end, Princeton pulled away winning their season opener, 6-2.
