Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University women's soccer team ran away with a 4-1 win over Wright State in the #HLWSOC Quarterfinal Round. Wright State finishes their season with an overall record of 6-7-5. RMU heads into the next round with a 12-4-3 record in 2023.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Hosting and playing in their first Horizon League playoff game in program history, the Colonials rose to the occasion.
RMU opened out the match with the first dangerous chance. In the 14
th minute,
Kaoru Hayashi down the wing crossed the ball in the air to
Renae Mohrbacher. Heading the ball on goal, her shot hit the crossbar, almost scoring by inches.
Shortly after, the Colonials executed on their next set-piece opportunity.
Last game, RMU took advantage of their corner kicks as they beat YSU, 2-1, scoring both goals off the corner. The first goal would be no different, as Hayashi skied a cross into the box. After a bounce on the ground, freshman
Shauna Gamble blasted it into the net for the opening tally.
Wright State did respond minutes later. Off a nice cross, Kaylin Helinski headed the ball into the bottom right corner, tying the game up, 1-1.
Before the half ended, the Colonials took back the lead before heading into the locker room.
The Raiders fouled 40 yards from goal. Hayashi on service, sent a ball into the 18-yard box. Gamble flicked on a header as senior
Haleigh Finale crashed the net and finished off the go-ahead-goal before the half ended.
Entering the second half,
Paloma Swankler finished off another goal for RMU five minutes into the next frame.
Later on, in the half, the Colonials kept up the offensive pace and scored another goal.
Off a free kick from the right corner,
Kaoru Hayashi ripped a free kick that took a redirection and bounced into the net, giving RMU a 4-1 lead.
For the rest of the game,
Brenna Murray in net didn't have to make another save and RMU won their first Horizon League playoff game in program history.

Last outing, the Colonials cashed in with four goals against Wright State and did so again in the quarterfinal round. Last time sophomore midfielder
Malia Kearns scored all four goals and this time there were four different goal scorers on the evening.
Haleigh Finale,
Paloma Swankler,
Kaoru Hayashi and
Shauna Gamble all scored their first career playoff goals.

RMU will now head to Milwaukee to face the #1 seed Panthers in the #HLWSOC Semifinal round. The game will be played on Thursday, November 2 at 1:00 p.m. CT.
