RMU Men’s Hockey to Recognize Willie O’Ree Academy Saturday, November 4

11/1/2023 5:33:00 PM

Moon Township, Pa. – This Saturday, November 4, the RMU men's ice hockey program will recognize the Willie O'Ree Academy at its 7 p.m. game exhibition game against Simon Fraser at Clearview Arena at the RMU Island Sports Complex.

The Willie O'Ree Academy, presented by DICK'S Sporting Goods, is a training and enrichment program for local African-American youth hockey players and their families, intent on advancing the skills of competitive athletes while developing a strong social support network.

It is named in honor of Willie O'Ree, who became the NHL's first African-American player in 1958 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder in 2018. The Academy is led by former Pittsburgh Penguins sixth-round draft pick Jaden Lindo.

Tickets for the game on Saturday night are on sale now and can be purchased by using the following link or at the Clearview Arena Box Office.

What they are saying:
"Thank you to Jaden Lindo and the Pittsburgh Penguins' Willie O'Ree Academy for supporting RMU hockey and taking the opportunity to learn more about NCAA hockey as well as the playing at the next level. Willie O'Ree is such an important individual in the sport of hockey as the first player to break the color barrier in the NHL and having an outstanding career as a player. Mr. O'Ree showed that the sport of hockey is indeed for everyone and we embrace that in Pittsburgh with the Penguins and at RMU as Pittsburgh's College Hockey Team." – RMU head men's hockey coach Derek Schooley
