Late Free Throws Lift Delaware Over RMU 73-69

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Christian Ray made two free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining to lift Delaware to a 73-69 victory over RMU on Monday night at the UPMC Events Center.
 
The Colonials (2-8, 0-2 HL) were led by Markeese Hastings' double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Justice Williams added 20 points and Jackson Last 11 for RMU.
 
Jyare Davis paced Delaware (7-3) with 17 points.
 
Down 11 points at the midway points of the 1st half, RMU went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to 20-19 and force a Delaware timeout at 7:54. The teams would exchange jumpers before the Blue Hens would go on a 14-5 run to go ahead 34-24 at 3:13. Williams' jumper closed out the scoring with the Colonials trailing 38-30.
 
A 3-pointer from Alfredo Boglio at 12:41 of the 2nd half got RMU within three points at 46-43 and a layup by Chris Ford made the score 47-45 at 12:12. That turned out to be RMU's last field goal until Last's 3-pointer at 2:04 which made the score 60-56. It would remain a four-point contest after Williams' 3-pointer with 52.8 remaining.
 
The Colonials had a chance to get within a point, but Williams' 3-pointer with 46 seconds rimmed out. RMU got the offensive rebound but could not convert a basket and settled for one free throw making the score 66-63 with 33.1 seconds to go.
 
Gerald Drumgoole, Jr. made both his free throws on Delaware's next trip down the floor. Williams responded with a layup as RMU called a timeout with 27.4 remaining, trailing 68-65. Cavan Reilly hit both his foul shots with 23.1 left, but Hastings and-1 got the Colonials within a basket at 70-68 with 12.3 left.
 
Jalun Trent made one of two free throws at 11.9. RMU had a chance to tie but the Blue Hens fouled Williams, who made 1-of-2 free throws with 3.2 seconds left, making the score 71-69. Ray was fouled and converted two to ice the game.
 
RMU returns to the UPMC Events Center to host Saint Vincent December 17.
