MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Youngstown State opened the 2
nd half on a 17-4 run to propel them to a 71-57 victory over RMU on Saturday afternoon at the UPMC Events Center.
Stephaun Walker led all scorers with a career-high 20 points and nine rebounds,
Markeese Hastings added 15 and
Justice Williams 10 for the Colonials (2-6, 0-2 HL)
Four players scored in double figures for the Penguins (5-3, 2-0 HL) with DJ Burns recording a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds.
With the score deadlocked at 15-15 with 10:52 to play in the 1
st half, YSU went on a 12-0 run over the next 3:25 to take a 27-15 advantage. But the Colonials would come back with 11 straight points, highlighted by a Wainwright to Walker alley-oop at 4:07 forcing a Penguins timeout. The run was capped by a Hastings dunk at 2:52 which made the score 27-26. The scoring was closed out with a Thompson 3-pointer followed by a Hastings layup, sending the game into halftime with YSU ahead 30-28.
By the under-16 media timeout, the Penguins rebuilt their lead to 43-32. By the midway point of the half, YSU's advantage had reached 20 points at 55-35 and would get as high as 24 points at the 8:35 mark.
As a team, RMU recorded a season-high 16 assists with
Alfredo Boglio accounting for four.
RMU heads to Buffalo to face Canisius December 6 before returning to the UPMC Events Center to host Delaware December 11 and Saint Vincent December 17.
