RMU Falls to Canisius 87-80

BUFFALO – RMU's late comeback came up short on Wednesday evening, as the Colonials fell 87-80 to Canisius at the Koessler Athletic Center.
 
Four RMU players scored in double-figures, led by TJ Wainwright with 19. Josh Corbin scored 16, Markeese Hastings added 14 with eight rebounds and Stephaun Walker had 13 for RMU (2-7). Jackson Last had a team-high nine rebounds.
 
Siem Uijtendaal led all players with 24 points. Frank Mitchell recorded a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds for Canisius (6-4).
 
RMU started the contest by jumping out to an early 6-2 lead. Canisius answered by hitting three consecutive 3-pointers and would hold the lead until an Alfredo Boglio layup followed by a Justice Williams steal and dunk put the Colonials ahead 25-22 at 7:53. However, the Golden Griffins would score on its next six possessions to take a 35-29 advantage at 4:36. Their lead would get as high as nine points before Hastings' dunk closed out the 1st half scoring with Canisius leading 42-35.
 
Mitchell's layup at 17:02 of the 2nd half made the score 50-39, giving the Griffins their first double-digit lead. RMU was able to carve away at the lead over the next five minutes. Trailing 57-52, the Colonials had a chance to make it a one-possession contest at 12:08, but Williams came up empty at the foul line. This led to a 9-1 run that put Canisius ahead 66-53 at the midway point of the half.
 
Down by 10 at 3:41, the Colonials scored the next five points to close the gap to 79-74 with 1:55 remaining. The deficit would still be five points with 30.4 seconds remaining on a Wainwright layup. The Griffins committed a turnover on the in-bounds pass 28.1 seconds left, but RMU had two consecutive empty possessions as Canisius made four free throws down the stretch.
 
The Colonials dominated in the point, outscoring Canisius 52-38 and had 16 second change points to the Griffins' 10. ­­
 
RMU returns to the UPMC Events Center to host Delaware December 11 and Saint Vincent December 17.
