Colonials Drop Series to Nittany Lions

Hatch registers her third straight 35+ save performance

University Park, Pa. – In game two of the series, the Nittany Lions won, 4-1. RMU is now 7-11-0 overall on the season and 4-4-0 in conference play. Penn State moves up to 10-7-1 overall and 7-1-0 in CHA games.
 
1ST PERIOD
  • Neither team scored through the first 20 minutes.
  • RMU recorded their most shots out of the three periods in the first (11).
  • Hatch faced 12 shots, saving all of them.
2nd PERIOD
  • Both teams were able to find the back of the net in the middle frame.
  • After the Colonials collected some chances, Tessa Janecke scored her first goal of the game and seventh of the season.
  • About four minutes later, RMU tied it up. Thalia D'Elia carried the puck from the neutral zone into the offensive area, skating past a defenseman. Closing in on goal, she found Mya Neugent entering the slot, as she backhanded in her third goal of the season on the power play.
  • Back on the ice shorthanded, PSU's Tessa Janecke slotted in her second of the game and eighth of the year.
  • Hatch posted 13 saves in the second period.
3rd PERIOD
  • Four minutes into the final period, the Colonials were back on the ice with one less skater. Penn State capitalized on special teams, as Mya Vaslet cashed in on the power play to extend their lead, 3-1.
  • With just over two minutes left in the game, RMU pulled Maggie Hatch from the net to try and score a late goal. Winning the puck in the neutral zone, Brianna Brooks passed in the empty-net goal to secure a 4-1 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Sophomore Calli Arnold led all skaters in blocked shots with three on the day. Providing consistency on the penalty kill, Arnold owns eight blocks in her last four games. On special teams, the Colonials finished 1-6 on the power play with five shots. The Nittany Lions were 1-5 with 11 shots on goal. Offensively, sophomore Morgan Giannone led the team in shots (5). Mya Neugent recorded her third goal of the year and Thalia D'Elia produced her fifth assist of the season. Sophomore netminder Maggie Hatch registered her eighth 30+ save performance of the season. Across her last three games, Hatch made 35 or more saves and paced for a .919 save percentage or higher.
 
UP NEXT
RMU will now get almost a month off until they host the Battle At The Burgh Tournament at the Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry, Pa. on Friday, December 29 and Saturday, December 30. The Colonials will face Bemidji on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and then will play Colgate or Maine the following day at 2 or 5:00p.m.
