Colonials Win Thriller Against Youngstown State, 65-63

Moon Township, Pa. – The Colonials played their first Horizon league home contest and won in thrilling fashion as they defeated Youngstown State, 65-63. With the win, the RMU women's basketball team improved to 3-5 overall while the Penguins fell to 2-6 on the season.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Colonials began the contest just like they have in previous games as they started fast and jumped out to the 21-14 lead over Youngstown State at the end of the first quarter. Naomi Barnwell came out the gate on fire as she had eight of RMU's points in the quarter as Simone Morris added five to help the Colonials gain the early lead.

With the Colonials trailing 63-62 and 22 seconds left in the game it was Naomi Barnwell who came up clutch for RMU as she sunk the game-winning with 13 seconds remaining. The Penguins in their following possession turned the ball over as the Colonials secured their first conference win.

PERIMETER SHUTDOWN
RMU had completely wiped away Youngstown State's ability to shoot from beyond the arc, especially in the fourth quarter. In totality, the Penguins shot 18.2 percent from the three-point line which was a season-low for RMU opponents. In the fourth quarter, YSU missed all four three-pointers they attempted as those missed opportunities aided RMU with how close of a result the game was.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Barnwell paced the Colonials with 19 points as that was also a career-high along with seven field goals made. Morris added 12 points and five rebounds as she also was 3-3 from the charity stripe.  Louella Allana notched seven points, five boards, and a season-high nine assists to help the winning cause. Natalie Johnson once again had a strong game off the bench as she had 11 points along with three made three-pointers which was a team-high.

UP NEXT
The Colonials will have almost a week off before they travel to College Station, Texas to battle Texas A&M next Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and can be seen on SECN+.
