Kahliel Spear of the RMU men's basketball team was named to the 2022-23 Horizon League All-Academic Team Thursday as voted on by the league's faculty athletic representatives. It marks the
second consecutive year Spear has been selected to the #HLMBB All-Academic Team.
To earn #HLBB All-Academic Team distinction, a student-athlete must own a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 on a 4.00 scale, participate in 50 percent of a program's competitions and have spent at least one academic year at their respective institution. Ties are not broken during the voting process, as student-athletes that earn at least 25 percent of the vote but are not part of the #HLMBB All-Academic Team earn honorable mention status.
Spear, a native of The Colony, Texas, and an economics major, has maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.91. One of just two Colonials to start each of RMU's 30 games during the 2022-23 campaign, Spear provides averages of 15.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game while shooting 51.3 percent (177-for-345) from the floor.
Having reached double figures in scoring in 14 consecutive games entering RMU's finale of the regular season tonight @ IUPUI, Spear ranks 10th in #HLMBB in scoring and fifth in rebounding with his per game averages while also sitting fifth in field goal percentage and second in blocks per game (1.30).
In helping the Colonials complete a perfect 3-0 homestand at the UPMC Events Center the stretched RMU's winning streak to four, the program's longest winning streak since joining the Horizon League, Spear became the program's all-time career leader in rejections. He owns 97 blocks for the Colonials entering tonight's tilt against the Jaguars and in 126 games at the NCAA Division I level, including 46 at Bucknell before transferring to RMU, has posted 127 career rejections.
During the 2022-23 campaign Spear has eclipsed
career totals of both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in an RMU uniform, becoming one of 15 Colonials in program history to reach both thresholds. The 26th player in program history to score 1,000 points, Spear ranks 21st all-time at RMU in scoring with 1,107 points as well as 13th in rebounds with 582. Spear needs just two rebounds to crack the top 10 in the RMU career record book.

Andrew Toole, the Colonials conclude the 2022-23 regular season with a 7:30 p.m. tip tonight against IUPUI in Indianapolis, Ind., at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum. RMU is assured of a home game in the first round of the 2023 Barbasol Horizon League Tournament and is still in contention for a bye.
