Schooley To Be Inducted Into St. Louis Amateur Hockey Hall of Fame

Will be the second father-son duo inducted into elite group

Moon Township, Pa. – Robert Morris men's hockey head coach Derek Schooley has been selected to be inducted into the St. Louis Amateur Hockey Hall of Fame.

"I am very honored to be selected to the St. Louis Amateur Hockey Hall of Fame," Schooley said. "I want to thank the committee, all of my former teammates and coaches, as well as my former players, assistant coaches and staff at Robert Morris. I also want to thank my family, as I wouldn't have been able to accomplish this without their support. I am truly honored."

The St. Louis Amateur Hockey Hall of Fame honors and celebrates those who support, promote and expand amateur hockey throughout the St. Louis region in accordance with their shared values of leadership, sportsmanship, fairness and integrity.

Schooley will be honored at the 15th Annual Induction Ceremony at the St. Charles Convention Center on Saturday, August 26, 2023 in St. Charles, Mo. It will be a special evening come August as Schooley and his father, Rick Schooley (2018 inductee), will be just the second father-son duo to be inducted into this elite group.

A native of St. Louis, Mo., Schooley led the Colonials to back-to-back Atlantic Hockey regular season titles from 2014-15 and a postseason AHA title/NCAA tournament berth in 2013-14. In the seven-season span from 2012-19, the Colonials averaged 20 wins per season and have consistently placed 20-plus student-athletes on the AHA All-Academic team. Since joining Atlantic Hockey 11 seasons ago, the Colonials have reached the Atlantic Hockey Final Four six of the past seven tournaments. Schooley has the second-best coaches winning percentage of all games in the history of Atlantic Hockey.

Under the direction of Schooley, the Colonials got off to their best start in program history in 2021 and saw themselves ranked within the USCHO Top 20 for much of the season, reaching a program-best #17. The Colonials earned a Western Division title and Schooley received his second AHA Coach of the Year Award while boasting the conference MVP, Rookie of the Year, and Defenseman of the Year. The top offensive team in AHA and one of the most prolific in all of college hockey, RMU's 85 goals was one of the highest totals in all of NCAA Division I.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris, Schooley spent five years at the Air Force Academy.  He was an assistant coach for four years before spending one season as an Associate Head Coach with Air Force. Before arriving at Air Force, Schooley spent a season as an assistant coach with Cornell during the 1997-98 season. Schooley started his coaching career with the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League in 1997 as an assistant coach and director of scouting.

A 1994 graduate of Western Michigan with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, Schooley was a four-year letter winner as a defenseman with the Broncos. As a senior, he tallied 23 assists and scored 27 points in 40 games, earning Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Defensive Player of the Week honors. He also received he KOHA Grinder of the Year award and led the Broncos in plus-minus ratio with a plus-22.

Following his graduation from Western Michigan, Schooley played for the Huntington Blizzard of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) during the 1994-95 season. In 66 games, he scored 18 points and compiled 151 penalty minutes. During the 1995-96 campaign, Schooley spent part of the season with the Blizzard before joining the Flint (Mich.) Generals, where he helped the team to a Colonial Hockey League (CoHL) regular season and playoff championship.
