Lauren Chappell of the RMU track & field team was named to the 2023 Valeo Horizon League Outdoor All-Academic Team Tuesday as voted on by the league's faculty athletic representatives.
To earn Valeo #HLTF Outdoor All-Academic Team distinction, a student-athlete must own a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 on a 4.00 scale, participate in 50 percent of a program's competitions and have spent at least one academic year at their respective institution. Ties are not broken during the voting process, as student-athletes that earn at least 25 percent of the vote but are not part of the #HLTF Outdoor All-Academic Team earn honorable mention status.
Chappell, a native of Cranberry Township, Pa., earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing earlier this month from RMU and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.75.
At the 2023 #HLTF Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Youngstown, Ohio, Chappell scored 3,951 points for the Colonials in the heptathlon to finish eighth. Her best event during the heptathlon was in the long jump, as she produced a leap of 4.82 meters (15'9.75") to finish fifth. Chappell, a three-time member of both the Horizon League Fall Academic Honor Roll and the Horizon League Spring Academic Honor Roll, also logged a personal record of 2:37.38 in the 800-meter as part of the heptathlon.
Also during the 2023 outdoor season, Chappell posted a personal record of 30.75 meters (100'11") in the javelin, which came at the RMU Midweek PR Bonanza at the P3R Track & Field Complex on Neville Island at the RMU Island Sports Center.
Chappell was one of 19 student-athletes to be named to the 2023 Valeo Horizon League Outdoor All-Academic Team, while another 10 student-athletes earned honorable mention accolades.
