Hastings, Wainwright Have Career Nights in RMU Men’s Basketball’s 102-99 Double OT Thriller Over Detroit Mercy

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. Markeese Hastings and TJ Wainwright combined for 61 points in RMU's 102-99 double overtime victory over Detroit Mercy Wednesday evening at the UPMC Events Center. With the win, the Colonials improve to 7-12, 3-5 HL while UDM is still looking for its first victory of the season, 0-19, 0-8 HL.

1st HALF
RMU came out of the gates building a 20-7 lead in the game's first seven minutes. UDM came back with a 16-2 run to take its first lead of the game 23-22. The lead would exchange hands four times before Hastings' put-back off his own shot with one second left sent the game into halftime tied at 41-41.

2nd HALF
With the score tied at the 11-minute mark, UDM went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 67-56 advantage. A pair of Wainwright jumpers sandwiched between two Hastings foul shots got the Colonials within five points at 69-64 with 5:18 remaining. Wainwright would score eight straight points as part of a 10-0 run that put RMU ahead 74-71. Jayden Stone was fouled and hit three foul shots with 26 seconds left to tie the contest. The Colonials could not get a shot off as the game went into overtime tied at 74-74.

1st OVERTIME
RMU scored the first five points of the extra period, but an 11-4 run capped by Marcus Tankersley's free throws with 30 left put the Titans up 85-83 with 30 seconds to play. Hastings was fouled six seconds later and hit both free throws to tie the game. Tankersley had a chance to win the game, but his layup rimmed out with one second left. The teams would go to double overtime deadlocked at 85-85.

2nd OVERTIME
The Colonials had a six-point lead with 47 seconds left, but the Titans got back-to-back layups to cut the deficit to 98-96 with 10 seconds to play. Wainwright was fouled on the inbounds pass and made both free throws making the score 100-96. On the next trip down the court, Stone banked in a 3-ball to make the score 100-99. Justice Williams was immediately fouled and made both shots. Tankersley's desperation game-tying attempt fell short as time expired.

SCHOOL RECORDS FALL
Hastings was a perfect 17-for-17 from the line breaking the previous program record of 16 free throws made by Anthony Dickens in 1990. RMU converted 36 foul shots which breaks a record of 34 that has stood since 1991.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

As a team, the Colonials' 102 points and 38 bench points were season-highs. RMU owned the glass, 49-31. In the second OT, RMU hit all 11 of their free throws.

PAT GALLAGHER HEAD COACH ANDREW TOOLE
"We had some incredible efforts tonight – Markeese and TJ obviously. Alvaro Folgueiras and Chris Ford gave us some great minutes. Down the stretch, Justice really worked hard. I'm proud that we were able to fight it out and made some of the plays that we made, and stops that we got."
