Colonials Fall to No. 14 Princeton in Series Opener

Kearns records her first career point

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – After opening the scoring, the RMU women's hockey team fell to No. 14 Princeton, conceding seven unanswered goals in a 7-1 defeat. The loss drops the Colonials to 3-4-0 on the season.
 
FIRST PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Just two minutes into the game, RMU capitalized on a power play. Mya Kearns sent a cross-ice pass to Janelle Evans, who found Veronica Bac in front of the net to tap in the opening goal.
  • Princeton quickly responded with three goals of their own, taking a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
  • In the final moments of the period, a successful challenge by Hockey Operations Coordinator Pat Barry earned RMU a five-minute power play.
 
SECOND PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Despite sustained pressure during the extended power play, RMU couldn't find the back of the net.
  • Princeton's Sarah Paul then scored a natural hat trick with three consecutive power-play goals, extending the Tigers' lead to 6-1 by the end of the second period.
 
THIRD PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • The final period saw no power play opportunities for either side.
  • Mackenzie Alexander added an empty-net goal for Princeton, securing a 7-1 win for the visitors.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Princeton outshot RMU 54-18 and went 3-for-3 on the power play, while the Colonials finished 1-for-4. Alaina Giampietro led RMU with five shots on goal. The Colonials blocked 29 shots in total, with Allyson Hebert blocking a season-high six and Kaitlyn Schooley adding five. Goaltender Maggie Hatch made 16 saves in the first period, and Lucy Phillips played the remainder of the game, stopping 31 shots.
 
COLONIAL FIRST
Freshman Mya Kearns, from Canonsburg, Pa., recorded her first career point with an assist on Bac's goal. In seven games, Kearns has also registered 13 blocked shots.
VETERAN
Captain Allyson Hebert played in her 100th career game tonight. From St. Andrews West, Ontario, she's produced one goal and 12 assists for the Colonials. 

UP NEXT
The Colonials will face Princeton again in the series finale, with puck drop scheduled for 3:00 PM tomorrow at Clearview Arena.
