Hatch Shuts Out Bemidji State as Colonials Win 2-0

Neugent and Evans score in the win

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. Maggie Hatch put on a stellar performance with 46 saves to help RMU secure a 2-0 victory over Bemidji State. With this win, the Colonials improve to 2-1-0 in the 2024 season.

FIRST PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Bemidji State controlled the pace early, outshooting RMU 17-9 in the first period.
  • Mya Neugent took a penalty during the period, but RMU successfully killed it off. After leaving the penalty box, Neugent nearly scored on a breakaway, setting the tone for her performance later.

SECOND PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Despite being outshot 18-8, RMU broke the deadlock with just four minutes left in the period.
  • After winning a defensive zone faceoff, Allyson Hebert and Jersey Phillips set up Neugent, who found a scoring opportunity and buried the puck in the back of the net against her former team.
  • Three minutes later, Janelle Evans scored her first goal of the season on a power-play, netting a tight-angle shot. Maddy Coene and Thalia D'Elia earned assists on the play.
  • RMU went 1-for-3 on the power-play in the period and successfully killed two penalties.

THIRD PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Neither team found the back of the net in the final period as Hatch made 11 more saves to preserve the shutout.
  • The Colonials killed one last Bemidji State power-play to secure their second win of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Bemidji State outshot RMU 46-19, but RMU capitalized on special teams, going 1-for-4 on the power-play while killing all four of Bemidji State's chances. Freshman Shayne Desjardins blocked eight shots, a team-high and a mark not reached in the program since the 2020-21 season. In total, RMU blocked 31 shots. Coene and D'Elia each earned their third assists of the season, continuing to lead the team in helpers.

HARD TO BEAT HATCH
Sophomore goaltender Maggie Hatch earned her second career shutout in tonight's game. Her first came last season during a 5-0 win against Mercyhurst in the CHA semifinal, where she made 36 saves. Hatch's 46 saves tonight were just four shy of her career-high 50, set against Minnesota State in November of 2023.

SERIES HISTORY
With tonight's shutout, RMU has now earned three shutouts in the all-time series against Bemidji State, with the other two occurring in 2013 and 2007.
