MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's hockey team completed a series sweep of Bemidji State with a 4-3 overtime win. The Colonials now stand at 3-1-0 to start the 2024-25 season.
FIRST PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
- RMU struck first with their first shorthanded goal of the season, taking a 1-0 lead seven minutes in. Allyson Hebert dumped the puck in, and a defensive mix-up by Bemidji State allowed Calli Arnold to capitalize with her first goal of the season, assisted by Jersey Phillips.
- With 20 seconds left in the period, Shayne Desjardins extended RMU's lead to 2-0 with a shot through traffic, assisted by Mya Neugent and Morgan Giannone.
SECOND PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
- Just 95 seconds into the second period, Giannone made it 3-0 with assists from Emma Goding and Neugent.
- Bemidji State responded three minutes later as Riley Reeves scored her first of the season.
- With 17 seconds left in the period, Isa Goettl brought the Beavers within one, making it 3-2.
THIRD PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
- RMU dominated the third period, outshooting Bemidji State 16-3, but they couldn't convert on two power-play opportunities, including a brief 5-on-3 advantage.
- Bemidji State tied the game 3-3 as Alyssa Watkins scored on the power-play midway through the period.
- After regulation, the shots were 30-28 in favor of Bemidji State.
3V3 OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS
- RMU held Bemidji State without a shot in overtime.
- Halfway through the extra frame, Thalia D'Elia made the play of the game, deking past the Beavers' goalie for the overtime winner. Giannone picked up her second assist, while Janelle Evans earned a helper on the play.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The game ended with an even 30-30 shot tally. Bemidji State went 1-for-4 on the power play, while RMU was 0-for-3.
Alaina Giampietro led RMU with seven shots, and Phillips and Giannone finished with a team-high +3 rating.
COLONIAL FIRST
Freshman defenseman
Shayne Desjardins scored her first career goal in the second period. She also leads the team in blocked shots with 12 over the past two games.
HATCH'S STREAK
Sophomore goaltender
Maggie Hatch put together a streak of 114 minutes without allowing a goal, making 81 saves during that span. Hatch has started the season 3-0 and now has 12 career wins.
STATEMENT PERFORMANCE
Graduate forward
Mya Neugent recorded two assists in the win against her former team, adding to her game-winning goal from the previous day. She now has one goal and two assists in three career games against Bemidji State.
THREE FOR GIANNONE
Junior winger
Morgan Giannone had a standout game with one goal and two assists. This marked her third career three-point game and sixth multi-point effort. Giannone has 10 goals, 12 assists, and 22 points in 72 career games.
OT HERO
Sophomore defenseman
Thalia D'Elia secured her second career overtime winner. D'Elia is off to a hot start, leading the Colonials with two goals and three assists in four games.
UP NEXT
The Colonials hit the road for their first away series of the season, traveling to Potsdam, N.Y. to face Clarkson in a two-game set on October 11-12.
