Colonials Tie Tigers, Earn Extra Point with Shootout Victory

Bac nets sixth goal of the season

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RMU women's hockey team picked up two points in their conference opener after a thrilling 2-2 draw with RIT, clinched by Janelle Evans's shootout winner. With the tie, the Colonials now hold a 5-5-1 overall record.
 
FIRST PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Just 20 seconds after RMU's first power-play opportunity, the Colonials struck first. Alaina Giampietro set up Veronica Bac from behind the net, with Bac's one-time slapshot finding the net for a 1-0 lead.
  • RIT responded six minutes later, as Addie Alvarez scored to tie the game 1-1.
 
SECOND PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • RMU regained their lead after forcing a turnover in the neutral zone. Madison Primeau's shot from distance rebounded off the goalie, allowing Calli Arnold to poke in the go-ahead goal. Ashlyn Ham earned the secondary assist.
  • Both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play during the period.
 
THIRD PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • With just over four minutes left, RIT tied it up on the power play as Nicole Ness scored off a rebound, sending the game to overtime.
 
OVERTIME
  • The five-minute overtime saw both teams' special teams on the ice, with each side unable to capitalize on a power-play chance.
  • Thalia D'Elia nearly won it for RMU with nine seconds remaining, but was stopped by RIT's goaltender.
 
SHOOTOUT
  • Janelle Evans scored the lone shootout goal, securing the extra point for RMU.
  • Netminder Maggie Hatch turned aside all three RIT shootout attempts.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
RIT outshot RMU 38-26, with Giampietro leading RMU with eight shots on goal. The Colonials went 0-for-5 on the power play, while RIT finished 1-for-3. Faceoffs were nearly even, with RMU winning 29 of 60. Alternate captain Jersey Phillips led the team with nine faceoff wins. Defensively, RMU blocked 21 shots, with freshman Shayne Desjardins blocking a team-high four. In net, Hatch recorded 36 saves, marking her sixth game with 30+ saves in her seven starts. Bac continues to lead the team in goals, netting her sixth of the season.
