RMU Football Falls at Central Connecticut in Double Overtime 35-33

NEW BRITAIN, Conn – Central Connecticut State (6-5, 4-1 NEC) overcame a 14-point 4th quarter deficit and would prevail 35-33 in double overtime over RMU (6-5, 3-2 NEC) on Saturday afternoon at Arute Field.

RMU led 3-0 after the 1st quarter, but CCSU took the lead at 10:31 of the 2nd at 7-3. Then it was the Rob Carter Jr. show. He took the ensuing kickoff 92-yards for a touchdown. Five plays later, he grabbed a pick-6 from midfield to put RMU ahead 17-7. The Blue Devils would kick a field goal before Carl Smith Jr. hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Chiccitt with 7:44 remaining until halftime.

Trailing 24-10 in the 3rd quarter, the Blue Devils scored at the 10-minute mark. Less than three minutes later, they would scoop up a Colonials fumble and take it to the house 49-yards to tie the score at 24-24. CCSU would force a turnover on RMU's next possession and would kick a go-ahead field goal with 1:13 remaining.

The Colonials began their drive at their 34-yard line and would take the ball to the CCSU 27 with four seconds remaining in regulation. Jayson Jenkins split the uprights from 45 yards to tie the score at 27-27 as time expired.

The first overtime was scoreless. William Barber intercepted a CCSU pass in the end zone to end the Blue Devils' drive. Jenkins' attempt to win the game was wide right, forcing a second overtime period. On 3rd and 3, Zach Tanner found Noah Robinson for an 18-yard score, the 2-point conversion was no good.

Central converted a 4th and 9 on their possession and two plays later they ran a reverse which saw Elijah Howard score from 12-yards out. On the 2-point conversion attempt, quarterback Brady Olson had his pass deflected by PK Ackah-Yensu and the ball fell into the hands of Isaac Boston for the game-winner.

DJ Moyer led all rushers with 88 yards. Robinson made four catches for 60-yards. Keon Freeman made a team-high 12 tackles.

The Colonials close out the season next week hosting Stonehill on Senior Day. Kickoff is at noon.
