Colonials Roll Past Lakers

Gulash and Zacher score twice; Elliott nets first career goal

ERIE, Pa. – The RMU men's hockey team scored five goals to defeat Mercyhurst 5-2 on Monday night, securing their first conference win of the season. RMU is now 4-1-2 overall and 1-1-1 in AHA play.
 
FIRST PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • RMU thought they struck early, but Cameron Garvey's goal was called off for goalie interference after a successful challenge.
  • Mercyhurst took an early lead with a breakaway goal from Dustin Geregach.
  • Just a minute later, Gavin Gulash responded with his first goal of the season, assisted by Patrick Johnson and Michael Craig.
 
SECOND PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Midway through the period, Dominic Elliott scored his first career goal to give RMU a 2-1 lead, assisted by Tom Gangl and Michael Felsing.
  • Mercyhurst evened the score with a shorthanded goal by Geregach, but RMU reclaimed the lead on the power play with Walter Zacher's fifth goal of the season.
 
THIRD PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • RMU played tight defense in the final frame, and with Mercyhurst pulling their goalie, both Zacher and Gulash scored empty-net goals to seal the 5-2 victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • RMU outshot Mercyhurst 33-28, converted 1-of-2 power-play chances, and killed all three of Mercyhurst's power plays.
  • The Colonials dominated faceoffs, winning 61.5% (40 of 65), led by Garvey's 12 faceoff wins. In goal, Croix Kochendorfer made 26 saves to earn his first conference win.
 
MULTIPOINT PERFORMANCES
  • Michael Craig posted his second three-point game of the season. He now owns three goals, 16 assists, and 19 points in his career.
  • Dominic Elliott netted his first career goal and added an assist, making it five points in his last three games.
  • Patrick Johnson continued his strong play with two assists, bringing his total to four points in his last three games.
  • Gavin Gulash and Walter Zacher each scored twice, with Zacher's six goals leading the team. Tonight, was his sixth career multipoint effort. Gulash notched his first two goals of the season, adding to his career total of 17 points.
 
UP NEXT
